Alfalfa Hay + Timothy Hay.

1. Hay cubes and pellets, as a forage substitute, will meet the daily needs of horses when fed at 1.5-2.5% of body weight per day, depending on the intensity of the work. This represents 15 to 25 lbs/day for a 1000 lbs horse.

2. Hay cubes and pellets used as a food supplement can be provided at a rate of 3 to 10 lbs/day for a 1000 lbs horse.

3. The ingestion of hay cubes and forage pellets is often faster than that of long-stemmed forage. Smaller, spaced meals can be beneficial throughout the day. A minimum of 2 meals/day or preferably more is highly recommended.

4. Nutritionists recommend that horses consume at least two to four pounds (1 to 2kg) of long-stalked forage per day to promote digestive health and avoid boredom and the development of abnormal behaviors (burp tic, bear tic, wood chewing).

5. Older horses with dental problems that limit their ability to chew can benefit from cubes and pellets of forage soaked for 0.5 to 1 hour. We recommend soaking the cubes and feed pellets for the majority of horses to minimize the risk of choking.

6. Researchers have shown that offering a small amount of alfalfa hay cubes about 30 minutes before exercise can be beneficial for buffering stomach acid which could protect the sensitive part of the stomach from acidity.

7. Hay in the form of Timothy or alfalfa pellets cannot completely replace long-stemmed hay. Horses fed hay pellets need 2 to 4 pounds of long-stemmed hay per day to ensure optimal functioning of the digestive system. Hay in the form of forage cubes can replace long-stemmed hay.
