Not what I expected for 3X the price of a bale of good alfalfa

We are trying to limit our outside exposure, and since our old horse just gets a small amount of alfalfa hay along with his grass hay and Senior pellets, I thought this would be a safe alternative for driving to a feed store for one bale. I have never bought such awful hay in my life. It's green, kind of, and it doesn't smell spoiled, but it's bone dry, and crumbles almost to powder when you touch it, and although the stems are not hard, they are big, so that even smashed flat, my guy can't chew them. I paid 3 times what I would pay for a bale of hay, but I thought it would be worth it. Never again.
Best packaged hay I have found

I have been buying the standlee premium compressed alfalfa bales for 6+ years from feed store chains, not from chewy. I board my horse and supplement his hay with the alfalfa for a protein boost. The last several bales have been extremely dry (straw like), dirty, rocks in the bag, to the point the horse kicks it aside and I toss it out. I saw the "certified" alfalfa here and read the reviews, decided to give it a try. This hay is soft, can easily be broken into flakes, smells and looks like fresh hay, the other alfalfa has an artificial green color to it. Well, the horse loves it so much that I immediately ordered another bale. This a keeper for us. Yes it is expensive, but if you order a 50 pound item from other equine sites, shipping is at least $35 added onto the item's cost, depending where you live. This is nice hay, works for our needs. Comes to my front door along with our horse feed...makes my life easier.
Best of the best

Nice fresh alfalfa but...
Great quality, convenient product, but the price Chewy is asking has gone up dramatically. Last time I bought it I paid less than twenty bucks.

Arrived quickly, and was beautiful compressed alfalfa. Will definitely be using chewy for this item.

I was getting the premium alfalfa but switched when it wasn't as nice as when I first started buying hay from Chewy. I only feed this hay to 1 of my horses. She is 32 yrs young with minimal teeth and she absolutely loves the certified alfalfa! Very green with lots of leafy to it.
Horses Love It!
A little goes a long way. Some dust so it's better to feed it damp but my horses love it!

I purchased this for gardening (mulching & composting). This is the best price I could find online for alfalfa, and chewy has great customer service. This is a little higher in price than a bale of twice the weight from my nearest feed store, however I can’t lift a full bale on my own and driving an hour when I only need one would be the definition of penny wise but pound foolish. Having this brought to my door in a size I can lift on my own justified the difference. If you have small animals, this is a size you could store in a large storage tub, saving over small packs of loose hay. Alfalfa adds nitrogen quickly when used as a mulch, and when added to a lagging compost pile, it heats it up quite quickly (I layered some in to my compost bin yesterday and the temperature is already moved from lukewarm to a nice hot compost). The leaves of the alfalfa are super dry and therefore do disintegrate when separating a piece of the hay but it is a good thing it is this dry: it’s packed in plastic, so even a whiff of humidity would mold it inside the package. It still smells fresh, looks very clean and consistent. Overall, it’s a super convenient way to get a bit of hay.
Good hay source

If you are going to go with Standlee's compressed hay, buy the certified alfalfa. Both the certified and premium are quite dusty and need to be thoroughly watered but the certified does not have the twigs and other junk the premium had in it. And the flakes are more defined. The certified does have longer stems but once watered, they are softer.
Very dusty and course stems
Was very unhappy with this alfalfa and won't be purchasing again.
