Feeding Instructions
All litter should be supplemented with Birthright Baby Pig Milk Replacer within 12 hours after birth. Colostrum: Be sure that all pigs receive adequate colostrum as soon after birth as possible. Cross fostering or split suckling can help ensure each pig receives adequate colostrum. If the sow does not give colostrum, there are commercial products available or cow’s colostrum (the first milk out of the udder). Colostrum may be fed to weak pigs via syringe and stomach tube. Supplementing Litters: Birthright recommends using a 1 gallon milk dispenser or an in-line milk system. Mix 5 cups or 1.1 lbs. of Birthright Baby Pig Milk Replacer per gallon of water. Birthright Baby Pig Milk Replacer should be fed cold from 12 hours of age to day 14 and then discontinued to encourage the consumption of the creep feed. Creep feed should be fed from 5-7 days of age until weaning; even during the period milk replacer is fed. To start milk feeding, place about ½ cup milk in bottom of the milk dispenser. The noses of 2 or 3 pigs can be dipped in the milk to encourage consumption. Always keep enough milk in the dispenser so it does not run dry. NEVER mix the milk to dilute (less than 5 cups). This can cause pigs to scour. In large litters or poor milkingsows, increase the amount of milk powder to 6-7 cups. Make sure a fresh, clean source of wateris available in farrowing crate for all baby pigs. Milk Dispenser must be cleaned daily: Rinse in cold water first, then wash and disinfect in warm or hot water. Place Milk Dispenser in an area that drains well: Do not put in corners or under heat lamps. A good location is up by the front shoulder of the sow.If scours occur: Double the amount of Milk Powder. If the scours do not clear up, remove the milk and put piglets on an electrolyte solution. Contact your veterinarian. Orphan Pigs: Mix 8 cups or 1.75 lbs. of Birthright Baby Pig Milk Replacer per gallon. Allow them to consume the milk free choice. House in a warm, dry pen. Hoovers and mats can help keep piglets warm and prevent drafts. Make sure a clean water source is also available.
