Sulfasalazine is a prescription medication used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) and colitis—two different conditions that cause the stomach and/or intestine to be chronically inflamed. It’s used to reduce that uncomfortable inflammation, tissue damage and diarrhea. Veterinarians may use this in the treatment of companion animals. Customers may receive this drug under the name Azulfidine.

May also be used to treat vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation).

Possible Side Effects

Please contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following reactions: discharge from the eye, redness of the eye, squinting or other signs related to the eye.

Drug & Food Interactions

Notify your vet of any other medications, including vitamins and supplements, your pet is taking before using Sulfasalazine. Sulfasalazine may decrease the absorption of digoxin (blood pressure support). Sulfasalazine may also decrease the absorption of folate (folic acid). Other drug interactions may occur.

Not for use in pets who are hypersensitive (allergic) to it, other sulfa medications or aspirin. Use caution in pregnant or lactating pets. May decrease fertility in males. Do not use in pets with intestinal obstruction or urinary obstruction. Use with caution in cases of anemia, liver disease or kidney disease.

  • Fights inflammatory bowel disease and colitis.

How is this medication given?

Sulfasalazine is given by mouth.

How does this medication work?

The exact mechanism of action of Sulfasalazine in treating inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Most of the oral drug is not absorbed into the blood stream, but remains in the intestine where it does its work.

What results can I expect?
