What keeps the tops of the steps from moving if you can move them for storage? My 2 yorkies likes running around and up and down my other stairs. I wouldn't won't them to get hurt. My yorkies is 14 and 15 lbs but very active.

The Pet Stairs have a piece of wood on the actual stair and frame of stairs that fit together, it shouldn't be easy for smaller dogs to slide.

At this time, there isn't an option to add onto these pet stairs to make them taller.

Would these steps be ok for a 40 lb Cocker Spaniel?

These Stairs are great for all breeds and are built to hold pets weighing up to 110 pounds.

Can these steps be stained or painted?

The steps can be painted however it's recommend using a pet safe paint or stain.

Easily assembled stable fixture. Was more attractive than expected. I overlooked the exact measurements at the time of ordering, so it is smaller than what my large dog can comfortably use. The cats will use it and the storage area may be useful. The actual step tops, slide into place, which may become loose if pressured under the edges.

Not very sturdy

Disappointing. One of the screw holes was too big making the stairs wobbly. It's easy to assemble but not recommended for large dogs, IMO.

Not built with your pet’s safety in mind

None of the tops of each step are secured in place. So they can slide and tip when your pet walks or stands on them. The back of the unit does not secure in place,

None of the tops of each step are secured in place. So they can slide and tip when your pet walks or stands on them. The back of the unit does not secure in place, so that slid out while my pet was climbing it. Yikes! I added hinges to secure each step in place and I used a staple gun to secure the back piece in place.
