When this arrived I was surprised at the quantity of food in the package. If my bird was an only pellet eater this would have been ideal. I've gotten pellet food for him before but it smelled like vitamins and he wasn't a fan. He did enjoy these but as I said pellets are not his only food source. I was concerned the food would expire before he finished the bag. If I had more than 1 bird this probably would be an ideal product to combine with the other things he eats.

Hari Tropican High Performance Sticks Bird Food, 8-lb bag This product comes beautifully packaged, and I looked forward to trying it out on Charlie (blue-and-gold macaw) and Stretch (greenwing macaw). These birds are both around 20 years old and pretty spoiled. They have eaten nothing but seed-and-nut-based foods their entire lives and seem pretty set in their ways. I have always wondered what they would do if exposed to an extruded bird food because I would prefer to know they are getting a healthy well-balanced diet, rather than picking and choosing their way through what I have been feeding them. I’m sure I don’t look at things in the same way my macaws do, but these Tropican Sticks are one of the most appetizing looking pellet-type foods I have come across. Unfortunately, remember I said “set in their ways.” At first they apparently didn’t share my opinion of what looks appetizing. I then mixed in small amounts of the sticks with their regular food and found equally small amounts of the sticks on the floors of their cages. I haven’t done a detailed study to see if some of the sticks are being consumed, but I think they are eating them. I definitely am going to continue to add this product to their food and to feel good about rounding out their diet.

I have a 28-year-old female umbrella cockatoo who has been eating the same pellet diet for over a decade. I got this bag for her to try and she took to it pretty quickly, and seems to like it better than her old brand. I have both brands offered in her bowl for now and the Hari pellets are gone first! The pellets smell pleasant to me, a bit like bananas. Each piece is about an inch long. I am comfortable feeding it as a main diet to my bird as it is a high-quality, complete diet with all the vitamins and minerals she needs. The price is reasonable for the amount you get.

I offered this to my Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo as soon as I got it....it was a hit right away, and she often keeps her head in her dish as she eats her food! I started with a small amount of the bird sticks, and they were all eaten soon after. She has continued to enjoy this bird food as a supplement to her regular diet which consists of fruits and vegetables. I also have a Moluccan Cockatoo who I've had for 45 years, but he was not really interested in this bird food. He ate one or two pieces and left the rest. I'm happy that at least one of my parrots consider this a good food or treat, and I'll continue to provide it as a supplement to her diet!

I have purchased from Hari previously with other macaw products so I know they are a good brand, and the ingredients in this one meet my approval for my girl. I gave this food only 4 stars because the scent makes me feel as if I am giving my birdie pieces of bird candy. It has a fruit flavor that smells very strongly like kid's bubblegum to me. That said, she gave me a kiss the first time I gave it to her which is her sign that she really likes something. The pieces are a good size for a macaw and not too big for smaller breeds. The bag is also a good size to last for a while too. This food may be perfect for more picky eaters with its enticing scent.

Food for larger sized birds

My bird is very picky, so I never rate based off just his opinions alone. I found both pros and cons for this product which I why I'm giving 3 stars. Pros: 8lb

My bird is very picky, so I never rate based off just his opinions alone. I found both pros and cons for this product which I why I'm giving 3 stars. Pros: 8lb bag option means having to buy less often. Large pellet size is great for the larger birds it lists for feeding on the package. Seems nutritionally balanced with no artificial coloring. Cons: Has an odd smell to it for bird food. Almost like bubble gum, which could be why my bird didn’t have an interest in it. Packing states it’s also for conures, however, I think the pellets are a little too large for them.

This is a winner!

We have 2 emus who refuse to eat any fruits although they love their veggies. I took a chance on this and they gobbled it up. Great ingredients and good size kibble

We have 2 emus who refuse to eat any fruits although they love their veggies. I took a chance on this and they gobbled it up. Great ingredients and good size kibble for them, average size is about an inch. Nice fruity scent too. There wasn't a lot of crumbs on the bottom either. This past the taste test with flying colors! Also a big plus was this didn't give them diarrhea...good in take-out put!
