How do you collect the hair sample? Does it have to be pulled out or can it be cut off?

Answer by ChewyDec 17, 2025
At least 10-15 strands are needed. There is no specific length required, meaning they can be shaved or cut hairs or taken from a brush after brushing.

We tried to do the old fashioned elimination diet, but it seemed to be getting us no where (because we were focused on the wrong things). Our vet thought maybe chicken was a culprit. We got this test, and discovered that my dog is practically intolerant to most grains and things I wouldn't have suspected (ex: rice, sweet potatoes) but okay with chicken. Once I started eliminating these things from his diet, I noticed a difference in a few days. We're still doing the elimination diet, but at least my dog has some relief. Practically all puppy safe treats we bought for him have sweet potatoes. I recommend this as a starting point for anyone who is frustrated with the elimination diet or who just want guidance on where to start.
