Vital Essentials Frozen Raw Patties Grain-Free Duck Entree Dog Food was a real treat for my 75 pound lab. It was mixed into her bowl of kibble over a two week period as to not cause stomach (or stool) upset. She loved it. Ate it quickly and stole from the golden what she hadn’t finished (she is a very picky eater and was not impressed). The food thaws in about two days in the fridge. It is a little disturbing as it bleeds a little when it is thawed. The lab thought that was the icing on the cake (but she also catches and eats wildlife in the yard).

Vital Duck Entree frozen raw dog food patties arrived well packaged and frozen. This 6 pound bag contains 12 half pound patties. When I was reading the ingredients to my husband, he made the comment that it sounds like something you buy as people food. After all, the first three ingredients are duck, duck gizzard, and duck liver. I put one to thaw in the fridge overnight, then gave it to my 80 pound German shepherd/ rough collie mix, Teddy, for his breakfast the next morning. He was totally thrilled and gobbled it right down. To be clear, this was just breakfast. According to the instructions, a dog his size should be eating appx. 3 patties per day. (Based on the recommendation for a 100 pound dog getting 3 3/4 patties per day, which equals 0.0375 patties per pound, times 80 pounds, equals 3 patties for an 80 pound dog.) When pulling out the thawed patty, I would put two new frozen patties in the fridge to be thawed for supper. At supper, I would repeat the process, pulling the thawed patties for feeding, putting a new patty in for breakfast. Thus worked well for always having a fresh thawed patty on hand. The instructions do say that they are good for 4-5 days in the fridge, so if one wanted to, one could put several days worth of patties at a time in the fridge to thaw. Whatever works. Teddy's stomach took well to the patty, despite being used to kibble. He does not have a sensitive gut, though. If he did, I would ease him onto this new food more gradually. Overall, I'm quite happy with this dog food. It's a nice way to spoil a pup while also only feeding him quality ingredients.

This arrived still frozen and was well packed. The dry ice had evaporated, but the packing had kept the food frozen. I followed the directions for my Chihuahua, just under 10-pounds for transitioning to this food. She was a little hesitant at first, but now she absolutely loves it. I let a patty thaw in a covered container in the refrigerator and leave the rest in the freezer. Very convenient! After it is thawed, I cut it into squares for the size of my dog and give it to her for her breakfast and supper. I shred it in her bowl to make it easier for her to eat and add a tiny bit of water as she is an older dog. She can't wait for mealtime because she loves it! I am noticing less shedding, and her fur is getting softer. The only downside is that it does smell like raw meat. But for my dog, it is okay. I would highly recommend this dog food---especially for senior dogs.

I make my own dog food. These frozen patties are an incredibly convenient way to add protein. I thaw one at a time and add some to each dog's bowl according to their size and needs. The patties flake easily with a fork once thawed. There is no waste as the portions are perfectly divided between my dogs and the patties remain frozen until I need them. The bag has a zip lock close to keep the patties fresh in the freezer.

This raw food has some pluses: it comes in a stack of frozen patties, which makes it super easy to store in the freezer and grab an individual patty to thaw one at a time. Once thawed, the texture is a finely shredded blend of meat. I thought the quality was great. Unfortunately, 2 of my 3 "volunteers" turned their noses up and walked out of the kitchen, which is practically unheard of in this house! Guess they are not open to the ways of the wild.
