We have been feeding our kitties Optimal Vitality for years as a part of their daily diet. They love it and are thriving. In addition to this high quality dry food they eat canned food and raw freeze dried.
We have been feeding our cats Wysong for years and years. It is incredibly dense in protein, never causes an issue, their coats are gorgeous and it has helped our oldest cat, Amelia who is turning 10 this year. She used to have very dry skin, her coat was brittle and shedding constantly. Now she has a gorgeous coat and her skin has cleared up immensely. I want to note she had been on several different kinds of cat food before we found one that worked for her that everyone could have. Wysong is fairly pricey, but I feel it is worth it especially this one if you have a cat with fish allergies! Our youngest is incredibly allergic to white fish, and so most foods she cannot have because of the menhaden fish meal. If you can't splurge for Wysong, I recommend American Journey by Chewy as it is also really great from our experiences. For those concerned about chicken meal being the first ingredient, there are disagreements on whether this is better or worse. Having chicken as the first ingredient increases the water volume and lessen the protein percentage. I recommend just doing what is best for your kitty, and remember that if they were to eat "free range" they get more than just the meat. Wysong is a great brand, and are very reputable amongst the small rodent community as well for their high protein low carb availability.
I liked this food, and I thought my cat was doing well on it, but the high protein is giving my cat disgusting sticky poop bombs that flood my room with the scent as soon as he’s out of the room. Tired of waking up at 3 AM to his horrible cat turds and having to clean it or I can’t sleep. Now his poops are getting worse so I’m switching ASAP.
My 2 older cats vomited after eating this, younger ones did not.
One sniff and my cat backed away and gave me a mean look. She will not eat it. I mixed it with her old food after that and she still won’t go near it. I think she hates the smell. I bought the Optimal Vitality and the Uretic kind also. I tried both. Same result unfortunately. I was really excited about the ingredients in this food and it being made by a vet. I am trying to wean her off of the Royal Canin Urinary SO. The last bag I bought seems like it’s been making her sick after she eats. She is just not as healthy. I swear it seems related to that food. Oh, well. On to the next.
This was one of the lowest carb kibbles I could find, and met the 10% max my vet requires for my cat that was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Both of my cats like the food and were quick to eat it. One of my cats tolerated it fine, but the diabetic cat vomited severely every time he ate the kibble. Even giving him small amounts caused him to vomit the kibble with a lot of liquid. He's on a mostly wet diet and the kibble was just supposed to be a snack between feedings to keep his sugar from dropping too low overnight. Even eating this as only supplemental he couldn't tolerate it.
I've tried different foods for my fur babies because most of them are fussy and it's hard to find a food that they all like that is good for them. I am still transitioning them to Wysong vitality, so I am only putting in a scoop with they're regular food (Rachel Ray's O Grain) and they go crazy picking out the Wysong bits before they eat the R R. I feed them wet in the mornings and let them free feed the rest of the day and 4 of them wait for the dry and won't eat their wet food. It's expensive, but they all love it and I know it's good for them, low carbs and low phosphorus and magnesium, so it will be they're new food. I just wish it came in bigger bags cuz my cat's go through 10 lbs. a week.
Wysong diet has proven to prevent kidney failure common to the Persian cat breed. I will never again risk another brand. The optimal Vitality is pebble shaped where as the Vitality is star shaped and easier for my cat to manipulate. Otherwise I would have given a 5 star rating.
When I brought home my older cat from the shelter (approx. 11 years according to owner surrender) she was very thin with visible hip bones, had rough-feeling matted fur, oozing eyes, and a slowly healing surgery site. She was eating meow mix and friskies. When I brought her home, I switched her to this. Now she has gained almost too much weight, and I need to monitor her food intake. Everyone compliments her soft coat! The vet said she looks very good for her age. This food is very nutritionally dense, so make sure you're feeding the right amount and transitioning slowly. She was so stinky and gassy when first switched.
It got by me that chicken MEAL is first ingredient. All those mystery parts. Skip it and go for organic chicken as a first ingredient. First ingredient has highest percentage so make it a good one.
