Zeal Canada Grain-Free Gently Air-Dried Chicken Recipe Dog Food, 1-lb bag

My dog loves these as treats over his food! Because he's on a managed prescription diet for digestive issues, I top his food with a small handful of these knowing they're healthy without fillers and preservatives. My vet looked at the ingredients and gave the ok because there was nothing in them that would cause problems and he really enjoys meals a lot more with them. I think they would also work great as healthy training treats instead of usual highly processed treats or pieces of hot dogs, cheese, etc. that dog owners/trainers often use.

Our toy maltipoo liked the Zeal dog food, except he couldn't eat a whole plate of it like regular dogfood. We are using it as treats for trainings, rewards, etc. instead. They are nice and thin and crispy and easy for the dog to chew. Probably any toy, small or medium-size dog would enjoy them. I like there is no odor with them and the package is easy to store and seal. I am also using them as little Christmas stocking stuffers for my "Granddog" - a Yorkie. He liked the ones our dog had, so I will reward him with a couple of these tasty treats.

This food smells good and looks fresh and my dog LOVES it. I gave her a taste and she sat in the kitchen for a long time hoping for more, although she had just finished her morning meal so wasn't hungry. This looks very similar to Ziwi Peak which I stopped buying because a Chinese company bought Ziwi and that means less transparency about ingredients. I watched a documentary that claimed some of the glycerin coming from Asia causes problems for dogs but American labs don't detect the chemical - a lab in Germany identified it back when all those expensive show dogs were getting sick and some died after eating their treats. ANYway, back to Zeal Canada. Canada has stricter controls over bad stuff in foods, so I thought I would try this. The ingredients are wonderful, but I am a little concerned about the dicalcium phosphate which is high on the ingredient list. It's supposedly safe for dogs but can build up in the system and cause kidney stones. So I plan to write to the company and request that they consider eliminating or reducing the amount. You never know. Some companies are very responsive to customers (and dogs!). In the meantime, I will give this to Sweetie in small amounts because she loves it and the other ingredients are super duper.
