About Ziwi Peak Pet Food

The Ziwi Difference

Ziwi carefully crafts their food to mirror the whole-prey, meat-rich diet dogs and cats require for a long, happy, healthy life. Their small, dedicated team proudly handcrafts Ziwi in small batches each day. With a passion for pets around the world, they are driven to put the very best of their New Zealand home into every recipe.

Free-Range, Grass-Fed

All ingredients are sourced from the green, free-range farms and blue, pristine oceans of New Zealand. Meats are sourced from humane, ethical and sustainably managed local farms. And fish is caught in the southern oceans of New Zealand, strictly managed to ensure maximum sustainability.

Air-Dried Recipes

Ziwi naturally preserves their dry dog and cat food by air-drying it, eliminating the need for artificial preservatives, salts, sugars or glycerines. Their slow, gentle, twin stage air-drying process results in a food that's as nutrient-dense and digestible as a completely raw diet, but safe and clean to handle, and can store for up to 21 months. A little goes a long way, the recipes are so packed with the good stuff

Moist Meal Options

Ziwi has moist dog and cat food recipe options too, Ziwi implements a small batch canning process to deliver high meat and moisture-rich recipes at higher can weights using the same free-range proteins that can be stored for up to three years.

Only the Good Stuff

Made with your pet's health in mind, Ziwi is made with absolutely no grains, corn, wheat, soy, rice, rendered meats, animal meals, meat by-products, cheap filler ingredients, starches like white potatoes and sweet potatoes, ethoxyquin, pea protein, salt, sugar, glycerine, artificial flavors or colors, antibiotics, growth hormones, or ingredients from China. Just pure New Zealand goodness that helps your pet thrive.

Happy Joints, Happy Pets

All Ziwi recipes include 3% New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels, a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin which support long-term joint health. The Green-Lipped Mussel may only be found in New Zealand, where it is farmed using ecologically-sustainable practices.

About Ziwi

As an innovator and global leader of air-dried nutrition, ZIWI is proudly crafted at their 100% owned kitchens located in beautiful New Zealand in the small coastal town of Mount Maunganui on the North Island and the rolling hills of Christchurch on the South Island. Ziwi's mission is to deliver pet food and treats that are carefully crafted to mirror the whole-prey, meat-rich diet that dogs and cats need for a long, happy, healthy life.

Questions & Answers

20 Customer Questions

What are the physical dimensions of each of the 6.5 oz. cans? Also, is it the same size across all of ziwi peaks' wet canned foods? If not, could you give us those dimensions also?
Answer by ChewyJun 29, 2021
Ziwi Peak cans are going to be configured a little differently than standard US cans as their food is made in New Zealand. The dimensions of their 6.5 ounce can are 70/73 millimeters in diameter x 57 millimeters tall. The diameter of all their cans will be the same size.

Why include chickpeas?
Answer by ChewyApr 13, 2020
Chickpea has natural binding properties, is high in protein and provides digestive benefits for both dogs and cats. The inclusion of chickpea has only increased the carbohydrate content by an average of 1.8% on an as-fed basis, and only half of the total carbohydrate content is from chickpea.

Is the feline recipe the same as the canine recipe? Looks like the same ingredients
Answer by ChewyFeb 13, 2019
The feline and canine food may have some similar ingredients however, they are formulated specifically for a certain species. Cats and dogs require different amounts and types of vitamins and minerals. The foods are not interchangeable.

Do they use dyes to color food
Answer by ChewyJun 16, 2020
ZIWI® Peak is a natural food, handcrafted in small batches. It excludes artificial fillers, dyes, and preservatives.

amazing ingredient list, but still bad

My cats are used to eating “healthier foods” not engineered to be addictive and even they didn’t like this food. In fact, one of them seems to have an eye (or a tongue?) for healthier foods because his stomach is sensitive and he outright rejects unhealthier foods that my other cat goes crazy for. My cat with a liking for the less healthy stuff finishes more of this food, even. This makes me think something is going wrong in the process of these and the ingredients list belies its actual healthiness. I used to make homemade raw for them back when I had the time, one of the flavors I made had practically the same ingredients (minus added flavors, fillers, and preservatives) and they loved those. Maybe shipment travel time and poor storage conditions are making these stale. Regardless, I would be a lot more okay with this if they had a trial size. I think most people would be too.

High quality food cats wont eat it

My indoor cats don't like it but I will keep trying. One of the ferals I feed wont eat it. I hope the raccoons like it. No cat would touch the lamb and venison recipe and I hope the raccoons like it, too. Of course I will donate some of it to the nearby shelter. My cats just like Friskies wet food although one has renal issues, the other asthma and IBD and should have better food. RC renal is not a hit either. Cats - can't live with them, can't live without them.

Sharp bones...

My cats love this food, but with every can I open, I have to carefully remove all the sharp whole pieces of rabbit bone. Some pieces are quite long and very sharp.

Great Cat Food

The Ziwi Rabbit & Lamb is a great food if my cats reaction is any sign. I am very happy to find a quality food without the high carb count and with top ingredients.

Not sure about the taste

The strays will eat this, but only some of it. I believe it is because they are not used to the taste. But, as least, they do not totally ignore it, so that is saying something.

Quite good

I bought this item to offer novel proteins to my kittens and due to the quality of the brand. My kitties like it, but don't love it. I tend to mix it with another food or put FortiFlora (probiotic) on top for added flavor. What I don't like is the amount of bones in the cans. I wish they made a bone free option. I reached out to the company and they told me this flavor has the lowest phosphorus of all the varieties.

Full of bones

Both types of this brand of food I've tried for my cat (this one and the Mackerel & Lamb) have little bits of bone in every can. Some small and brittle enough I wouldn't worry about, but also pieces of bone up to the size of my pinky nail with sharp edges that could definitely harm a cat if swallowed whole. I would expect better from cheap grocery store food, much less this extremely expensive imported brand. Chewy even replaced the first batch of this Rabbit & Lamb for me because of the bones, and recommended I don't feed it. Problem is, the new batch was exactly the same, full of little jagged bones. Avoid this stuff.

A Hit with the Kit

This food is a definite hit with our little man. And our vet says it's very good for his allergies as it's a simple protein that's easy on his digestive system as well.

The best food for my cat

I have a cat that was having loose stool for weeks on end. The vet said to put him on a prescription diet but I didn't like the ingredients. Instead, I changed to the rabbit and lamb Ziwi and he got better immediately. Now that's all he eats and is doing very well. No more problems after 6 months of trying to find a food that didn't upset his stomach. LOVE this brand and my cat is worth every penny.
