What are the benefits of Zonisamide?

  • Can help to control seizures alone or in conjunction with other therapies.
  • Seizures may be controlled when this medication is given only once daily in cats.
  • Minimal side effects in comparison to other seizure medications.

How is this medication given?

Zonisamide should be given exactly according to your veterinarian’s instructions. Make sure your pet has water available at all times while taking this medication. Zonisamide can be given with or without food. The capsule cannot be broken. Always give them whole. If you are unsure of how to use this medication correctly, always call your veterinarian.

How does this medication work?

The exact mechanism of action is unknown but Zonisamide supposedly blocks sodium channels in the brain which decreases the activity of nerve cells so they do not fire abnormally. Zonisamide may also alter calcium levels in the brain.
