What is Zonisamide?

This is a capsule that is given in order to treat seizures that occur as a result of epilepsy and other causes. Some veterinarians prescribe it as a single medication or in conjunction with other medications in order to control seizures in dogs and cats.

What are the benefits of Zonisamide?

Can help to control seizures alone or in conjunction with other therapies.
Seizures may be controlled when this medication is given only once daily in cats.
Minimal side effects in comparison to other seizure medications.

How is this medication given?

Zonisamide should be given exactly according to your veterinarian’s instructions. Make sure your pet has water available at all times while taking this medication. Zonisamide can be given with or without food. The capsule cannot be broken. Always give them whole. If you are unsure of how to use this medication correctly, always call your veterinarian.

How does this medication work?

The exact mechanism of action is unknown but Zonisamide supposedly blocks sodium channels in the brain which decreases the activity of nerve cells so they do not fire abnormally. Zonisamide may also alter calcium levels in the brain.

What results can I expect?

Zonisamide usually takes about 2 to 4 hours to work to its maximum. If your pet is going to have side effects, you may be more aware of them during this time period. Half of this medication will be excreted from the body within Zonisamide 50 to 70 hours.

Reliable for my dog's meds and other things

My dog has epilepsy and I've gotten his meds from Chewy since he was diagnosed. I never worry about them being delayed and the one time they had a shortage they informed me in plenty of time to find it someplace else. The times I've talked to customer service I was more than satisfied. I think Chewy is a great company

Twelve Years and Going Strong

We adopted Brutus at 1 1/2 years and he had scary seizures. Now at 13 1/2 he has been almost seizure-free with a few very minor episodes. Auto shipping from Chewy makes everything very easy and cheaper than getting his medicine from the local pharmacy.

Is your dog having seizures?

My 14 year-old Schnoodle began having seizures about 1-1/2 years ago. Vet started her on Zonisamide twice daily. She has not had a seizure since. Obviously good stuff!

Good product

This works to prevent seizure for my girl, however, the shipment was a disaster, I received the shipment on time, but the top was not put on the bottle (child proof top) and the 240 pills were laying in the box. The last pharmacy order they sent pills they would expire before they were used as the prescription dose. Love the prices but quality control is lacking lately.
