All natural wood leaches tannins, which discolor water and reduce pH levels. To minimize this effect, soak wood in a separate container, and change water daily to remove excess tannins. The wood will be ready when the water color goes from dark brown to a very light. Adding extra carbon to your aquarium filter can help remove any remaining discoloration.

Murky Like Nature
By Greenery on Jan 16, 2021
I think people have too high of expectations with these types of purchases. You're getting a piece of wood, a stick- adjust your excitement meter a bit. I don't have a pot big enough to boil this chunk of mopani. I cleaned out my sink well and then placed the wood in it, dumping pot after pot of boiling water until the sink was full and letting it sit until it was cool enough to touch. This did not completely remove the tannins because it needs a rolling boil for that to happen quickly. This is fine. I will do water changes frequently until my water starts to clear up, this is not an issue. I have nothing bad to say, this was a great purchase.

drift wood
By Benjamin on Feb 8, 2021
I bought two, they are wildly different. But this was half the price I would have paid at a store . Both are quality pieces . One is more twisted and the other is a better basking spot for my skink. It was a random bag pretty much but I’m happy about the price and I have enough enclosures to find a spot for these

As expected
By Jenn on Feb 4, 2021
I love this piece of wood and how much it releases the tannins in my Betta tank. It is exactly what I expected. The piece I received was kind of L shaped and fits perfectly in the corner. I placed a plant in the natural hole in it and it looks stunning.

Very happy with this purchase
By Tina on Feb 10, 2021
After reading some of the reviews I was a lil scared to buy this but jumped the gun and did anyway. I couldn’t be happier! The 2 pieces I bought were a lot larger than I thought they would be and they are perfect for my 65 gallon. I would def buy these again

Not what I expected
By Sillyfigbash on Dec 18, 2020
So when we got this item, it was/is fairly bizarre looking.....perhaps the one I got is just like that. I thought the price was fair, and was hoping for something that looked a little bit more like a "root system" rather than a huge piece of what almost looked like a chicken finger from a Chinese food restaurant! (Weird analogy, but that was what it looked like!) Plus the color was also kind of orange, although they do say to soak it a few days for a fish tank. I did for about a week. It ended up being too weird/thick for my little 5 gal fish tank. It is in my cellar now in a box. If you have a big space, it would probably be fine.

Disappointed
By Saramag on Jan 30, 2021
I am very disappointed with this piece of aquarium wood. I have had it now for a few weeks. It keeps changing the color of my water to a reddish brown. I have boiled it many times and have been soaking it now for a week in a bucket but the water is still horrible.

Added for Hopes of a Pleco Sighting
By Shelly on Dec 30, 2020
Bought this in hopes of seeing my bristlenose pleco more, jury is still out on that... Soaked for 3 days for initial tannins to release then placed in the tank. Did a 15% water change after a week and the water looks back to normal color. Helps buffer due to the sand substrate in the tank. Darker than expected, but an interesting piece, nonetheless.

Not as pictured
By Confusedpleco on Dec 21, 2020
So this was kinda confusing the picture of the product is an amazing sort of ball or knot of Driftwood what I got was a stick ...... a literally stick about two feet long and skinny and tapered to the end yes its a piece of Driftwood but its a skinny stick no knots no offshoot limbs no design i got a pointed stick . Im not pleased.

Boil/Soak/Voila!
By GreatNeptune on Nov 23, 2020
I boiled my small piece for 2 hours, changing the water at the hour mark. I then soaked the piece in hot water overnight for around 10 hours. It has been in my tank for over a week and very little tannins have colored my water. I LOVE my driftwood!! Once I upgrade my other fish tank I plan on getting more. Helps soften the pH of your water too.

Junk piece don't buy
By Rick on Feb 19, 2021
Nothing like I asked for waste of money just a stump no limbs just a chunk of wood to take up space at bottom of tank
