Is this food made in the same location as chicken based food? My dog is allergic to poultry so I need to be sure there is no cross-contamination.
Answer by ChewyFeb 19, 2021
Yes, chicken-based foods are made in the same Kitchens as our ACANA Duck & Pumpkin with Wholesome Grains. ACANA's production lines are not considered hypoallergenic. However, in order to minimize the likelihood of proteins from one diet appearing in another, the Quality Assurance Department ensures that they have validated control measures (such as cleaning, sanitation and flush procedures) to ensure the safety and quality of their foods.

the perfect for for my sensitive pup

We struggled on and off for 2 years to find a food that my chocolate lab could eat that would not upset his stomach, we even tried prescription diets but unsuccessfully. Finally our vet recommended a single protein, grain inclusive diet that did NOT include peas, potatoes or other legumes and so I found acana ancient grains! This duck and pumpkin formula has been a saving grace! Within the first week we noticed an improvement in our dogs energy as well as his poops! The most solid poops he’s ever had and we’ve never gone back! The price is high, especially since the price went up but worth it in my opinion. We tried the lamb and pumpkin as well but learned lamb isn’t a protein our dog can have. 5 stars for sure!!

Allergy food

My dog is allergic to so many foods. This food has none of her trigger foods and she likes it. Thanks to the Chewy associate who patiently helped me find it.

High Quality but High Price

Both my dogs enjoy this food, but they are not picky eaters - I've never found a dog food they didn't like! In researching dog foods, this one meets my requirements: limited ingredient, pea-free, no wheat, no soy, no corn. ARCANA has high quality ingredients - better than most. However, it is VERY EXPENSIVE. Natural Balance L.I.D. has the same first 2 ingredients (duck and duck meal), meets my same requirements, and is $30 cheaper for a 24 pound bag. I think ARCANA is slightly better quality, but IMO it's not worth the added cost.

Perfect for food allergies

We have struggled to dianose the source of our lab mix's skin allergies since he was a pup. I've tried so many different foods, but he continued to scratch and lick himself. I have suspected he has environmental allergies in addition to food, but after using this for more than six months, his allergies have disappeared. His coat is super shiny, he no longer looks like he had dandruff, and his stools are small and firm. It did give him awful gas for the first few weeks, but that is gone now. We have tried the wholesome grains lamb, fish, and duck, but the duck seems to be his favorite. I do like how I can rotate them so he doesn't get bored. Yes, it's expensive, especially considering my boy is 101 pounds, but due to the very high quality of this food, I feed him less than previous brands and he still leaves food behind in his bowl. After struggling for years, this is a winner for us. The cost is totally worth it, and much cheaper than a trip to the vet to treat his skin!

Panda approved

My dog is allergic to peas and brewers yeast. It is hard to find a dog food that does not contain these ingredients. I am so pleased with finding this brand. Panda likes her new food and I’m glad.

Helped Me Learn My Dog Likely Has A Grain Intolerance

Our pup has been doing well on Acana Duck and Pear Singles, however because of the recent findings of DCM in dogs on grain free recipes I decided to change him over to a food with grains. I got to the half old and half new point and our pup was scratching and licking himself constantly; I suspected the new food and went back to his old food and saw a 90% improvement in just a few days. I'm assuming he must have a grain allergy as that was the main difference in the foods.

Another reviewer stated "the american naturals duck and butternut squash is just as good if not better. " This is a loaded statement. This food is a LIMITED diet containing only one meat source and a LIMITED amount of ingredients, typically to help diagnose a feeding issue. It is also gluten free and all natural. The American Naturals contains duck only as the first ingredient which uncooked is mostly water. The second two ingredients are turkey and turkey meal which means it likely contains more turkey than duck. It also contains pork meal, pork fat, beet pulp, and is not gluten free. It may be a fine food on its own but the comparison is invalid in my opinion. The two foods are not in the same class.

Wanted to love this

I've been feeding Acana Wholesome Grains, either Duck and Pumpkin or Lamb and Pumpkin, formulas to our three dogs for three or four months now. I love the ingredient profile and, initially, how well our dogs seemed to do on it. Our English Bulldog has a very sensitive tummy and allergies. Our vet recommended trying a basic lamb and rice dry food to help with her allergies. Not wanting to lose out on the progress we saw with ACANA, I combined the two foods for awhile. Unfortunately our EB didn't tolerate the lamb (either brand) well. And now seems to have digestive issues with the duck and pumpkin. Our other two dogs love and have done well with ACANA.
