Amitriptyline is a local anesthetic

When my cat was prescribed 5 mg of Amitriptyline some years ago, the veterinarian explained about the local anesthetic effect. Cats don't like the numbing sensation in their mouth. Cutting a 10 mg pill in half interferes with the enteric coating that delays contact with the medication until it is in the GI tract. The vet had a pharmacist compound a gel that I rubbed inside the cat's ear twice a day. It worked great. It just meant washing inside the ear with a moist cloth, drying and applying the gel with my finger. I just meant a few extra wash clothes for the laundry. It looks like a compounded gel is now available commercially from Chewy.

Smells Horrible

This was compounded because my cat wouldn’t take a pill. However, this was so much worse. Between the smell and having to wrangle the cat to administer it was chaos

Cat hated the taste (chicken flavor)

My cat wouldn't take the medication. He hypersalivated after trying it in his food.

I was having a hard time getting my cats to take the pills, so I thought the liquid would be better. My cats hated it and I felt like I was causing them more distress by trying to make them take it. So this was a fail for my cats. I think it’s worth trying. Maybe it could work for some cats. I’m still searching for something to help my 3 year old cat, who is skittish already, get along with my older cat. 3 years getting along until they didn’t.

After I gave my cat the chicken flavor medication she started excessively foaming from the mouth. Lasted for about 20 minutes. I called her vet and was told it was an adverse reaction and to stop immediately. I really felt bad for her and should have listened to the reviews before agreeing to go with this medication.

My cat has an over-grooming problem due to anxiety. My vet recommended we try the liquid because she’s been difficult to pill in the past, but unfortunately like the other reviews mention the taste was a major problem. She immediately started foaming at the mouth and drooled for a solid 45 minutes afterwards. I don’t have the heart to do this to her every day and will hopefully be trying the pills or another form instead. Would recommend avoiding the liquid if you can!

Cat reaction

Ink foamed at the mouth and hated it. Would not ingest it even in food. I'd recommend the ear application of this drug if your cat reacts so negatively as mine

this is the best!!

This is the best thing ever! It has been a huge lifesaver for my cat. I was trying to give him a pill every day until I noticed little red pills all over the house because they were apparently being spit out. :) I didn't even know that you there was a liquid option. A friend had pointed me to chewy to get it because the pills that they have here are easy to crush. So that it is what I intended on getting. Well low and behold it comes in liquid!! It has been amazing. Occasionally he does still run away to avoid it but it is so easy. And there is nothing for him to spit out :) He didn't like it mixed with food of course but at least I can mostly get it into him every day with minimal fuss. I highly recommend this.
