Both types of diets can be a good fit. It just depends on the needs of your pet and your personal preference. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates that provide dogs with the energy they need to thrive. But if your pet has sensitivities to grains, you would want a grain-free option. Even Blue Buffalo’s diets with grains are made without corn or wheat — part of our True BLUE Promise. Instead, we use wholesome oats, barley, and brown rice. Both grains and grain-free carbohydrates are healthy and nutritious; we recommend talking with your veterinarian to decide which option is best for your pet.
While grains provide nutrition for pets, some people choose to avoid grains for various reasons. Grains are not common allergens in most dogs and cats, but if your pet is allergic to a specific grain or ingredient, you should avoid it. Blue Buffalo foods never contain corn, wheat or soy.

I’ve been feeding my dog blue Buffalo his entire life. He recently has been experiencing excessive thirst! This week we went to his vet and asked for bloodwork and it came back that he has serious kidney issues and was prescribed science diet k/d! I’m devastated and not 100% sure that’s it’s due to this food but I can’t point to anything else.
I have three dogs. My oldest, 12 yrs., had eaten this most of his life, no problem. Since they changed the recipe (adding grains), he has had stomach problems and his whole demeanor has changed. He has been less active and grumpy with my other dogs. I had put it down to old age and the possibility that he was eating something in the yard that hurt his stomach. I was a dummy. I narrowed it down to the food. Shame on me, but also, shame on Blue Buffalo and what has become of them. Don’t fall for their PR BS. It’s just not good food anymore. If it hasn’t affected your dogs, good for you. If you’re thinking of trying it for the first time, I would suggest looking for a different brand. I put my boy on a grain free senior food, now I’m switching my other dogs to something else. Blue Buffalo is not the company it once was, regardless of their marketing.
I agree with ALL the below! This food is terrible. My dog always has soft stool, and his mood has completely changed. Unfortunately, I have been feeding this same food to my dog since birth and don't want to change it. It looks good to a person who is not retail savvy the increase in food amounts by adding grain, but now I'm dealing with mold and a price increase. Chew, please do better.
I feed the original formula for 6.5 years as it was grain free. It came with warning that it now contained grains and my dog suffered for 2 weeks until his digestive system adapted.
Blue Buffalo kept the same packaging, but added, “New Recipe.” The new recipe has grains, which defeats the purpose of what this product used to be. On top of that, they increased the price significantly. We’re done with this product and Blue Buffalo.
After seeing that the other wilderness brand that was grain free has been discontinued I contacted blue buffalo. I asked them if it was going to come back, and they said no all their wilderness brands are no longer grain free. The representative at blue buffalo informed me that the new wilderness formula has more protein and you get more food for your money. It even states on the bag that you get more food. After comparing labels it’s very easy to see there’s no change other than they’re adding fillers to the food to save money at the same time charging us more money for less food. very deceptive. It’s very easy to see on the old label of wilderness grain free there is 32% protein. The new label on the wilderness is the same. The only thing that’s changed is more fat and added fillers, with vegetables, barley and other things. It’s amazing that the representative at blue Buffalo would make up a story stating their food has more protein and is better for a dog with a simple comparison of a label shows they’re being deceptive.
Chewy is reliable in terms of tech, product selection, responsive service and in general all service logistics. Reconciling a 55% price increase on dog food within 8 months is tough, even knowing that Chewy is simply the last link in the supply chain.
My dog had been on this food since he was 6 months old with zero issues. He's now 2.5 and it's no coincidence that as soon as they changed the recipe he now alternates between throwing up or having diarrhea every other meal. Not happy about the change at all. Will be finding another option.
I received 3 bags of this food for my 5 month old German Shepherd puppy and 2 of the bags are all MOLD, and my dog got very sick! Be careful on this purchase! They wouldn’t help me return the bad items sent! Just offered me a discount of 10%. Never again
