Questions & Answers

11 Customer Questions

Where are the cans manufactured? Does Canidae use a co-packer for the cans and if so, who manufactures them? Thank you
Answer by ChewyOct 10, 2019
All their products are cooked in U.S. facilities. They have their own facility in Brownwood, Texas named Ethos Pet Nutrition where most of their products are made. Some of the ingredients used in their products are sourced from outside of the USA like the Lamb, as it comes from New Zealand and the Salmon from Canada.

What is agar-agar?
Answer by ChewyNov 18, 2019
Agar-Agar is used as a binding ingredient. This means it's used as an emulsifier and as a thickener. Agar-Agar is sourced from red seaweed or seaweed.

Is this a GMO product?
Answer by ChewyApr 28, 2019
Although CANIDAE is unable to guarantee non-GMO sourcing at all levels, they choose to use non-GMO ingredients whenever possible.

Are the cans BPA free?
Answer by ChewyFeb 17, 2022
CANIDAE cans are BPA Non-Intent. This means that the cans do not intentionally include BPA, but the third party manufacturer that produces their cans does not guarantee that there is no carry over from cans which may include BPA in the same facility. Any trace amounts of BPA fall well within current FDA guidelines.

Great food but....

I just switched Maddie to this food. I was concerned because reviews I read were all over the place regarding how dry & compact the food was in the can. It is a very dense pate like food but none of the cans has given me cause to be concerned. Maddie (Great Dane) is not food dependent so it's always a pleasant surprise when she likes something. She gets 1/4 can of Canidae 'all life stages' with each meal to augment her kibble (different brand). I add about 1/4 c hot water too and she gobbles it down. Let's talk packaging (cans)...about 4 of the 12 cans were dented. This is concerning as dented cans can compromise the contents. The case was shipped in a larger box/shipment so it is clear the mishandling did not happen during the shipment to my house. I ordered this case along with a case of Merrick and 8 of the 12 cans of Merrick were majorly dented too. Chewy, you should not be shipping food with damaged packaging! 5-Stars for the food Canidae | 2-stars for the damaged cans!

Like Concrete

First of all, Chewy was quick to refund me. Thank You for the excellent customer service. I ordered 4 cases. Opened one can and I could barley chisel it out of the can. I then opened one can from each case of the other cases. Same Result. I received the old (yellow) style label. The food also had a greyish color and because of that, I will NOT donate it to anybody. I went to a brick n mortar pet store and bought several cans (yellow) label and they seemed to be okay. I see Chewy is now selling a new label of this same recipe.

What happened to Canidae?

I’m not sure what happened, I’ve bought this brand for quite awhile. The last shipment was dry and some cans were dented. I only want the best for my dog, but the quality of this brand has diminished so badly I’ll be looking for another brand. Food is stiff, dry, and discolored.

Last Two Cases have been very dry

We have been feeding our two Cavachons Canidae since they were puppies and have had no problems until the last two or three cases we ordered. All of the cans lately have been extremely dry compared to previous orders. While the dogs don't seem to mind, it makes it difficult to get the food out of the can and divided between the two dogs. I'll be looking for another brand.

Finally...A Food He Will Eat

We have a special needs (blind) rescue that is the pickiest eater we ever had. He prefers dry food but will only eat 2 or 3 meals from each bag and then wants something new. We heard that Canidae was a can food that came dry and sticky. Indeed it does. Just the way he likes it. For those reviewers who were dismayed over the consistency of this food...add some water and you have what most other foods look like. Only more of it. Good stuff. Highly recommended.

Hard As Cement

This canned “pate” used to be a reddish brown color but now it’s grey. It used to be nice and soft. But now it’s grey and is impossible to get out of the can. It is not the same and has changed for the worse. I have to switch to something else.

very good, but…

I bought 2 cases of 12 on January 31st, and as other reviews have stated, the food is a bit difficult to scoop from the can, so here’s what I do: use a stainless steel teaspoon with a long handle, scoop in middle, around sides and once 1/4 is removed, pour a little water in, wait a few seconds and scoop the rest. Very simple. As far as the food itself goes, my dog loves it, and his poop is great. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the label changed, and sometimes that means ingredients change, and the most recent reviews are awful. This is a concern for me, so I don’t know if I’d buy it again.

disappointed this time

I’ve been using this food for several months as a way to dispense medications to my Rottweiler. The most recent case I purchased was not as expected. The product in the middle of the can is moist but toward the edges the product is very dry. It takes some effort to get it out of the can. It’s so dry that I can’t mask a pill without first adding some water to the food. The expiration date is Feb 2025. I plan to purchase another case hoping this last case was just a fluke and I won’t have to change brands.

Terrible stuff

I was so excited when I ordered this dog food from the description. But the food was disgusting. When I opened the can the food was so hard and dry I could barely scoop it out with a spoon. My dog wouldn’t touch it. Zero stars from my old dog.

Quality Issues

I have ordered the Canidae Chicken & Rice Formula for All Life Stages three times in the last year. The food has always been very solidly packed in the cans, but the quality of the last order we received is not the same as the others. The food is so hard at the top and down the sides of the can after opening that it is difficult to get any of the food out of the can. Only food from the center of the cans has been soft enough to be useable, so I am wondering how healthy it is to feed my dog. I have opened three cans out of one of the two cases I purchased last, and they have all been the same. It is almost like it was over cooked and solidified in the can. I have had to throw away at least a third or more of the food from each of the three cans. Wondering if anyone else has run into this same issue. The code on the bottom of the cans are: 052A1 CCRD 21:34. The second case has the same code on the cans, so I hope that they will not be the same, otherwise I will not be purchasing anymore Canidae canned dog food due to quality issues.
