I also could not understand how to tighten the gate, but Alanna gave a great explanation above. I never would have thought to use a wrench on that barrel tightener otherwise. Product should have this in the Instructions section. Giving it a 4 star because once up you can’t easily open and close it, and the instructions could be a lot better.

I wanted to make sure I reviewed this item because there seem to be a lot of misconceptions in other reviews. At first, I had difficulty getting the gate to tighten and thought that I had to choose between one hole or another and that there was no way to tighten it further. I could not get the barrel part to rotate. At first. I discovered that it was on very, very tight and once I loosened it with the wrench and was able to spin the barrel away from me, it tightened up the gate very securely to both sides of the wall. I was initially afraid that I would break it if I forced the barrel, but it is supposed to turn. Take a wrench and turn it towards the gate away from you to loosen it the first time. It is secure and cannot be knocked over.
