Cerenia is an antiemetic, which means it can help prevent vomiting. For dogs, veterinarians may prescribe Cerenia to prevent vomiting from car sickness (motion sickness), or to safely and effectively treat acute vomiting.
Veterinarians also use Cerenia Injectable in dogs to help prevent vomiting before surgery when opioids are used as a pre-anesthetic.
Cerenia is available for dogs as a tablet you can give your dog at home to prevent car sickness or to extend the therapy time after your dog receives an injection. For acute vomiting, Cerenia is available as an injection that your veterinarian administers.
Many things can cause vomiting in dogs, including toxins, various drugs, diseases or even parasitic infections. And, well, we all know that dogs vomit sometimes. Acute vomiting is when vomiting suddenly happens and can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Many times, a dog may keep vomiting even after the stomach is empty of everything except bile. If your pet experiences acute vomiting, contact your veterinarian.
Cerenia is non-sedating, which means it doesn’t cause drowsiness. So when you reach your destination, your buddy will be his or her usual self. This is different from medications such as Benadryl and Dramamine, which may cause drowsiness and are not FDA-approved for vomiting in dogs.
Cerenia is the first and only FDA-approved anti-vomiting medication for dogs. Unlike Benadryl and Dramamine, Cerenia doesn’t cause drowsiness, is available in multiple dosing sizes and has been clinically tested to safely prevent vomiting in dogs.
The active ingredient of Cerenia is maropitant citrate, a neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor antagonist. Maropitant blocks the action of substance P — a neurotransmitter involved in vomiting — in the central nervous system. By blocking substance P from binding to the NK1 receptor, maropitant can prevent vomiting.
Cerenia starts working quickly to prevent or treat your dog’s vomiting. It’s effective for about 24 hours.
In clinical studies of Cerenia, common adverse reactions noted were hypersalivation, drowsiness, lethargy, anorexia, and diarrhea.
The dose of Cerenia to be given depends on whether it is being prescribed to prevent vomiting from car sickness or to prevent acute vomiting at home. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for Cerenia as prescribed.
To prevent vomiting from car sickness, give your dog Cerenia with a small amount of food 2 hours before traveling. You can do this once a day for up to 2 days in a row.

I ordered these from Chewy as they were much less expensive than directly from my vet but the amount of time and hassle I had to spend communicating with Chewy and my vet probably wasn't worth it. It took over two weeks to get the prescription filled. Chewy kept promising that they would take care of it, but I had to call them almost every day. To add insult to injury they keep saying they would expedite the shipping once it was filled and then when it came time that was no longer an option no explanation given.
We have an older (10 +\- yrs) small beagle whose trachea problem has grown significantly worse over the last few years. His coughing used to come only after drinking water but then started to occur at other times. Our vet put him on Hycodan which really didn't resolve the problem (maybe some minor help). I started giving him cerenia (1/2 of a 16 mg tablet) every other day and the coughing has been much less frequent. This has been for a couple months now. I've been trying to give him 1/4 of a 16 mg tablet but it's too early to tell if that works.
It was a relief to discover that I was able to get a higher count at a much lower cost on my prescription. Oddly it wasn't in it's original packaging when I received the order. Regardless it's a huge help that I was able to cut the cost in half of what I was paying weekly.
This medication has been so helpful for my dog with vomiting issues - I just wish it was less expensive - but Chewy usually has one of the best prices, unless another site is offering a discount on this medication, which Chewy rarely does.
ordered this nov 8th, delivered on nov 15, I have never had a Chewy delivery take a week, very surprised at the time it took. Had to go to my vet to get meds to hold me until this delivery go here. disappointed
We give our pup half a tablet of Cerenia before any travel and it always works wonders! He used to puke after 1 hour of driving, but so far he's successfully driven 4 hours without any incidents. It does make him a little sleepy, but we recommend it for any dogs that gets car sick!
Had some hiccups with prescription - the vet moved, our pet's name was spelled a little differently on some records, etc. Our vet communicated with Chewy, and they quickly fixed the hiccups. Customer service at Chewy is excellent.
We tried a lot of things for my poor girl Winnie who gets sick in the car. It's so nice to know that if I give her one of these, we don't have to worry about her getting sick or a mess in the car.
My kitty has difficult to treat IBD, which sometimes presents with vomiting. Cerenia makes him feel better fast. He only needs 1/4 of a tablet to calm his tummy. Great med!
My dog needs this to travel with us. Works great and we have tried everything. Prescribed by my vet. Still very expensive but best price has been through Chewy.
