Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic prescribed to treat many common bacterial infections including urinary tract infections as well as skin and respiratory tract infections in dogs. This medication may also help treat enteritis (inflammation of the intestine) that's caused by specific types of bacteria. Customers may receive this drug under the names Chloromycetin, Viceton.
Chloramphenicol is indicated for the oral treatment of specific bacterial pulmonary infections, bacterial infections of the urinary tract, bacterial inflammation of the intestine, and bacterial infections associated with canine distemper.
Possible Side Effects
Not intended for use with dogs who intend to breed. Some experiments indicate that this drug can cause, particularly females, significant disorders in morphology as well as in function of the gonads.
Drug & Food Interactions
Chloramphenicol should not be administered simultaneously with penicillin or streptomycin.
This antibiotic contains a chemical structure (nitrobenzene group) that is characteristic of a group of drugs long known to depress hematopoietic activity of the bone marrow.
