It is not recommended to use calcium sand for Geek tortoises.

The optional BioDrain Terrarium Draining Mesh (sold separately) will keep the BioDrain Terrarium Draining Substrate separated from the decorative terrarium top-layer substrate and prevent the different substrates from mixing and contaminating the water.

Is this lightweight or like regular gravel?

The substrate is a bit lighter than gravel. It is similar to crushed lava rock or pumice stones.

Decent drainage layer

I am fairly sure this is just crushed lava rock rebranded, or something that looks and behaves exactly like it. But I purposely bought it with that in mind, and

I am fairly sure this is just crushed lava rock rebranded, or something that looks and behaves exactly like it. But I purposely bought it with that in mind, and it is a fine price for the amount of lava rock without having to bulk buy a large amount. It works well as a drainage layer and the crevices create a lot of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on. Definitely rinse it before use like it advises on the bag-very dusty if you don't and it will create a lot of sediment!

Drains just fine really dusty had to rinse with treated water and strain a few times before use.

NOT what is shown at all! Can't use.

What I "see" in the photos is something 1/4=5/8". It is NOT! All it is, is big chunks of Heavy lava rock 5/8"=1 1/2"! The one star is for fast shipping.
