Is this brand of gravel coated with anything, or is it truly natural gravel?
Answer by ChewyApr 19, 2019
This gravel is 100% natural.

Can these really be used for aquariums? I bought some for my 20 gal and am washing/rinsing them and a film is coming off floating in the water. I have soaked rinsed several times.
Answer by ChewyAug 01, 2019
Polished pebbles are coated with paraffin wax. Darker colors may fade over time depending on sun exposure and water use. If used in aquariums, please be sure to rinse and clean before adding to any tank application.

I've bought this gravel before and LOVE it! My question is, how many 20lb bags would I need for either a 55 gallon, or a 100 gallon, aquarium?
Answer by ChewySep 08, 2018
A 55 gallon aquarium will need 110 pounds of gravel or 5.5 x 20 pounds bags if you'd like a 2 inch layer of gravel. If you'd like a 1 inch layer, you'll need 55 pounds of gravel or 2.75 x 20 pounds bags. A 100 gallon aquarium will need 100 pounds of gravel or 5 x 20 pounds bags if you'd like a 1 inch layer of gravel. If you'd like a 2 inch layer, you'll need 200 pounds of gravel or 10 x 20 pounds bags.

Would this be safe for something like Kuhli loaches? I’m getting plants and loaches and while I’m not concerned about the plants, I know loaches need really smooth gravel if they can’t be put on sand. Would this be smooth enough for them to safely live on?
Answer by ChewyJul 08, 2019
The size of the gravel might not be suitable for Kuhli loaches. Sand is the preferred substrate for these fish, but small smooth gravel will also suffice.

Attractive and easy to Clean

These small rocks are smooth, easy to clean, and attractive in my aquarium. They lay flat and have minimum grooves and crevices for food to get trapped in, or else is easily eaten by scavengers, snails, and plecostomus. After a quick rinse to make sure there's not any dust there were a great addition to my new tank. Would definitely recommend a new going to replace the gravel out of my other tanks since this stuff is so much better. I didn't encounter any small or broken pieces that would get clogged in my gravel vacuum like I've experienced with most gravel.

Absolutely stunning

I searched high and low for the perfect gravel. I took a shot and ordered online because the picture they provided looked nice. I expected to not like as much as pictures are always better than the real thing... right? Boy was I wrong! It even prettier in person!

This purchase was a giant mistake.

The reviewer that said the gravel is not actually black, but more of a muddy grey, is correct. That doesn't bother me. The reviewers who said the gravel is coated with an oily/waxy substance are correct. That wasn't much of a problem for me. My problem is that these stones are so large that food falls down between them where the fish can't get at it and no amount of gravel vacuuming ever really helps for long. And this even though I run a reverse-flow undergravel filter. I thought larger/smooth stones would be a good thing for corys but I am now looking for gravel to redo the tank with. There's probably some application that this gravel might be good for, but it's a giant failure as an aquarium substrate.

Not good for Aquariums Coated Rock!!

Per description and some feedback I bought this for my 20 gal. As I was rinsing/soaking it I noticed floating scum and residue on bowl. (Not dirt). I rinsed under hot water in a colander and as I turned the rock, I got black greasy residue all over my fingernails. So, I decided to boil some of the rock, sure enough a greasy / oil film floated out of rock. Now I have 40 lbs of rock I can’t use in my fish tank!!!

Cloudy Fishy Smell

I bought 2 bags rinsed them repeatedly before putting in my turtle tank. 3 days now I am doing daily water changes. The water is beyond cloudy and reeks like fish. My whole house smells horrible. My tank has never been like this ever! Before I just had straight glass bottom few rocks but never covering the while thing. I had to change the water frequently because it would get murky and a little smelly. But now I cant stop the water from getting super cloudy and nasty. I have changed my filters every single day since putting the rocks in and they are just nasty every time. I have been threw 8 filters and it shows no sign of getting better. Super upset . This is right after 3rd water change. Water was crystal clear going in. Fresh filters and getting cloudier by the min. My turtle isn't even back in the tank yet.

Looks awesome

These pebbles are shiny and smooth and look wonderful in the tank. They aren’t too small. Cleaned in bleach and the color wasn’t affected.

Black pebbles

Priced right, great deal. Pebbles are dark grey as opposed to black but look great in our tank. Received item at the door in a few days!
