This filter measures approximately 5.5 inches long x 3.3 inches wide x 0.1 inches thick.
Do I put the black side of the filter towards the front or the back of the fountain?

It was originally recommended that the black side of the filter face the bowl and this is reflected in some manuals. However, with that being said, it was later determined that the filter will be equally effective in either direction. So it will be perfectly fine, whichever way your filter is oriented.
