I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Low in sodium
By DogDad on Feb 1, 2021
When we found out our dog had CHF we were recommended to go to a low sodium food. In addition to feeding our 9 pound Morkie quality beef, fish, turkey, veggies and other home made foods we just started giving him some of this kibble at the vets recommendation. First the kibble is a very large size for small dogs. They will need to be soaked in water for this to be an option for small dogs or those without teeth. Also, with all of Hill's prescription foods, the ingredients seem to be questionable. The main ingredient in this food is corn. Also it does not have a lot of meat protein. It's only redeeming quality is that it is low in sodium 0.12%. The other closest kibble I have found with low sodium When we found out our dog had CHF we were recommended to go to a low sodium food. Great Dog Food, just a little large
By Kelly on Jan 2, 2021
Great quality dog food! Recommend by my Veterinarian for pups with MV issue and one with CHF. My Cavaliers really like it! The only thing I would change is the size of the kibble, it’s quite large. However my 12lb and 17lb Cavaliers manage to eat it.

h/d Hills Science Dry Dog Food
By seabyrd on Jan 19, 2021
This prescription dog food for heart problems may be good, but cannot get my small dog to eat it because the kibble is too large. It would be nice if there was h/d dry in small kibble.

Good stuff
By SamiandBlake on Jan 7, 2021
Our dogs love their new food. The bites are too big for then. So I grind up mix with water and make mush. They love the mush and lick the bowls. Thank you for great food.

Dog whom eats everything wont eat it
By doreen on Sep 7, 2020
I am giving 3 stars vs 1 only because I appreciate that a dog food exists to help dogs with heart conditions. However, it’s super expensive for something that doesn’t contain, in ingredients, anything more expensive then other foods nor does it require a different type of processing to manufacture to thereby warrant the extra expense. The high price makes it out of reach for some people who want to feed their ill pet the right food for his/her condition. It loses 1 more star because my little guy, who will eat just about anything, won’t eat it unless I mix it with something else. I’m glad it seems to be working for many other people.

Good service, good product

My Dogs Love This Food!
By emelson on Sep 3, 2020
I have two mini schnauzers, both age 9. One of them recently was diagnosed with an enlarged heart, and the vet said it wouldn’t hurt for the other to eat the same food. I started working on switching them over, using 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food. They both picked through the old food to eat this. The kibble is roughly the size of my thumbnail, for those asking about how big it is.

Dog won't touch it
By Yikes on Aug 1, 2020
My dog has heart and kidney problems. He loves the Hills Prescription Diet Kidney formula, but will not touch the heart formula. The one time he ate it he threw up. I will try again, but don't hold out much hope for this food. I wish it cam in other flavors besides chicken. I think salmon would be great.
