The fish is gently steamed at about 165°F before being dehydrated to make sure they're safe and free of any pathogens, without the use of harmful irradiation. These Smittens treats are dehydrated, and not freeze-dried.

My cat with allergies can basically only have freeze dried treats (like whole minnows) which are really expensive, so it's a relief to find something else he enjoys that doesn't cost $20/bag!

My more finicky eater will take one though it takes her a long time to eat it. Others have commented on the odor, which I did not find to be that strong. Not that expensive of a treat to at least try it.
