Questions & Answers

7 Customer Questions

How many cups of food are in the 5.4 lb bag?
Answer by ChewyMar 10, 2022
The 2.7-pound bag contains approximately 10 cups of food and the 5.4 -pound bag contains approximately 20 cups of food.

Curious about how this arrives and how I prepare. Will it be frozen? Do I need to do anything before feeding?
Answer by ChewyNov 02, 2021
We package frozen items in an extra-thick insulated box with a bag of dry ice. This ensures the food remains frozen all the way to your door. Food should remain frozen until meal time. Bites thaw in minutes and should be cold to touch.

Does “raw” mean uncooked? Is it safe if we warm it up in a pan?
Answer by ChewyMar 24, 2022
This raw food is never cooked. Instinct does not recommend cooking the Instinct Raw Frozen Food. If it is cooked the nutrients will be cooked out of it and your pet will not be getting the proper vitamins and minerals needed in their food.

If used as a supplement for a 18 lb. dog, given 1 cup of dry food/day, how much is an adequate portion? Or should we cut back on the dry in lieu of added Instinct Raw
Answer by ChewyDec 06, 2021
According to the feed instructions for 16-25 lbs would be 2-3 cups. Always introduce a new food over a period of 5 to 7 days, mixing increasing amounts of Instinct with the current food each day.

Instinct Raw Lamb Recipe

My dogs, small and big love this dog food. Sometimes they get picky and the little ones won't eat. This food always entices them. The big dogs love it when I top their dry food with this, and it is so good for them.

they like it.

First time I bought frozen food. The dogs love it, however… I wish they had put the label saying there is DRY ICE at the top instead of the very bottom. I had no idea dry ice was packaged with it and I grabbed it under the assumption it was just ice packs. Hurt my hand really bad. Be careful for first time frozen buyers.

Incorrect quantities

I love this food for my dogs, I have had the three-pack on my auto-ship for months now. My last order arrived and there were only two out of three bags of food in the package despite the packing slip stating all three included. Can’t figure out who to contact to correct the mistake and all of Chewy’s customer service links are going to blank pages on both the website and the app. I hope someone sees this review who can help!

Well Intended Raw Food

My pup’s usual raw food has had some logistics issues as of late so I’ve been trying to find more accessible alternatives for when I can’t get his usual food. I’ve used other Instinct products in the past with more success. My already picky Goldendoodle puppy has had a liking to some of the freeze dried raw options from Instinct. This however, was not a successful option for him. From a serving perspective, the bag is huge and yet not enough to last a week’s feeding for a 16 pound pup. It’s super uncomfortable to fit in the freezer. When thawing for mealtime, the raw bits become a gelatinous mush. I tried feeding for the last two weeks…of which A has only consumed it once, about 1/2 a serving. The one time consumption led to the worse diarrhea and vomiting…the food came up nearly whole and like jello. I feed with a slow feeding mat, so the likelihood of it being speed of consumption was low. I’m disappointed in the turnout. I will not repurchase. 2 stars instead of 1 because I respect the quality and intention of the ingredients.

Great food.

My old terrier has become allergic to any type of dog food that contains chicken, beef, and anything with preservatives. I was making homemade food for a while and that got very tiring. A friend told me about this food and surprise, NOT ALLERGIC. Very satisfied with this food so far.

so healthy!

Dog loved.. a bit timid at first if not thawed fully. His digestion and appetite did very well with this. Will buy again. Worth the money.

Raw is not for every pup

I bought this for a picky eater. She currently eats lamb and rice kibble and this was just going to be an addition to make her food more exciting. Unfortunately, she throws up within minutes of eating it. Thank god i asked for a wet-dry vacuum for christmas. It comes packed really well in dry ice. The food seems high quality. Just Dont automatically assume raw food will just “work”!

Lamb is ho hum

My dog will reluctantly eat this by itself. It's okay if I mix it with the beef she really likes. I would still recommend.
