Has anyone found an alternative (limited ingredient/novel protein) that doesn’t smell so bad coming out the other end? I remember reading reviews prior to buying thinking “it cant be that bad” but our apartment never stops smelling like poop. Please help!

Is this food really supposed to be totally BLACK in color?
Answer by ChewyNov 15, 2017
This kibble has a raw coating and the formula has a high protein content. This gives the kibble a very dark brown, almost black color.

What exactly is rabbit meal?
Answer by ChewyMar 18, 2020
Rabbit meal is a high quality concentrated protein source that contains muscle meat. By law it may not contain heads, feet or intestines. Meal is made by grinding the protein after it has been rendered (cooked in a stew-like way but at high temperatures) and then dried so it'll contain a higher protein content and low moisture which helps provide the pet with the most nutritional value in the food.

Why use tapioca? Seems unnatural for cats. How much of the food uses tapioca?
Answer by ChewyJan 14, 2021
Tapioca is a starch derived from the root of the cassava plant; it is grain-free and gluten-free. There are no known allergies to tapioca. Instinct uses tapioca in their grain-free kibble. Without some sort of natural binder, the ingredients in the kibble would not hold together for the cooking process. Tapioca is a rich source of dietary fiber and can help add protein to the diet. Furthermore, tapioca contains vitamin B’s as well as some other minerals (iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium). Ingredients are listed in the order of the percentage that they appear in the food. However, we cannot release the exact percentage of each ingredient because this would reveal our formula and it is proprietary information.

Stool Firmer

I usually don’t leave reviews, never have on chewy. But I had to with This food! I have three kittens and two adult cats. All of which have grown up and have been growing up on Orijen Kitten and Six fish. A very good brand if you’re not familiar. But, two of my kittens randomly started to have loose stool almost runny. I finished the remaining Orijen and bought another bag to help with transitioning. Come to find out this wasn’t even necessary. I used the recommended transitioning guidelines and after the first feed , no more loose runny stool. I purchased this food due to it being a singular animal protein and it was highly recommended for cats with a sensitive stomach. AND it’s a better price point than Orijen, aha. Get it, over the other singular proteins this brand cary’s

Concerned about the color

I’ve never seen a dry pet food as dark as this one. It is fully black and I have no idea if that is something to be concerned about or not. On the Instinct website the dry food is depicted as very clearly brown. Has there been a change recently in production/recipe and the site’s just not up to date or is this a bad batch? Cat also does not seem too interested in this food, but is willing to eat some.

Jack and Caty approve!

Jack and Caty have issues eating food with chicken, so our vet put them on a rabbit and pea diet years ago. It is VERY difficult to find a dry cat food that does not contain chicken. Instinct has solved this problem! As stated in other reviews, the food is very dark and it does make their poop stink - but I'd rather deal with stinky poop than ill cats.

Picky picky picky

OK....I LOVE INTINCT brands. My dogs are all loving theirs and I have been told by someone who has had this food analyzed that it is a great product. I used the dog food on her recommendation and am not sorry. This cat food is also great, but my poor cat had a bit of a time adjusting to it and her BMs told me so. It seems though, that she has adjusted to it....and while she is not known to be picky, she is now 11 and has decided to play her game HER way. This is a great product. I'm going to preserve and hope that she adjusts.

She loves it

I got this food because my cat has developed some sort of allergy to something. Her vet said we should change her food, and look for a hypoallergenic food. I picked this one because she is a picky eater and she loved it right away. I was afraid she would refuse to eat it, but thankfully she loves it. She does seam to be getting better but she misses her treat’s and her vet said we should not give her any treats. I guess she will just have to get used to going without the treats.

No allergic reactions.

One of my 3 cats has been having varying levels of allergic reactions (skin rash, severe itching, vomiting, bad gas). I only recently found out that the allergies were being caused by her food with the help of my veterinarian. I’ve tried many premium brand foods without luck. She actually got worse. The Instinct limited ingredient diet, rabbit is what she needed. After weening her onto this food her symptoms have mostly disappeared. It has only been a week, but I’m feeling pretty good about her recovery. My other cats love it too!

It's been a big hit

For about a year I've been feeding the wet versions of Instinct rabbit foods to my IBD cat, who can't have chicken products. Since I got the dry version she's eating that almost exclusively and has gained a pound. She's at the point where I'm going to have to start metering it again, instead of letting her have free choice. She's stopped bugging me all day long for the wet version and gets a little bit in the morning as a treat, but otherwise is happy to have the dry. On the other hand, no one else in the house will touch any Instinct foods, wet or dry. So as with any cat food, whether someone will eat it is completely dependent on the individual cat.

Good for cat with ibd

I needed food for my ibd cat. First I tried a few other brands, including prescription, that was expensive and my cats hated. All my cats like this one, but it didn’t go over well for one of my cats digestion. However, it’s been perfect for my cat with ibd. So, even though I hate having my cats on different food, here we are.

Very happy

Had a very easy transition from hydrolized to the rabbit. Haven’t had any real issues with smelly stool, it is black though. Our 1 cat has a food allergy and this food seems to have finally done the trick, no more over grooming. This has been a 2 yr journey trying to find the right protein. I took almost 2 mos to really see the results we were hoping for.

Meh, she says.

I have a kitty who seems to have a food allergy, she scratches like crazy. So I though I'd try this kibble. OF COURSE, MS. PICKY SNIFFS IT AND WALKS AWAY! She is stressing me out! Guess I'll have to gift this $30 item to a friend with a feral cat colony. Don't get me wrong, I think the ingredients are great, but my Darla doesn't think so.....ARGHHHH!!!!
