Questions & Answers

It states finest ingredients "from around the world" exactly where and what are the ingredients? Why would they need to get ingredients from other countries?
Answer by ChewyDec 29, 2017
Nature's Variety is committed to using high quality, safe ingredients from government-inspected facilities. The natural ingredients are continuously inspected for quality and tested for analytical compliance before being accepted at their facilities. They do not source any of the meat or poultry from China. All of the poultry and pork come from the U.S., the beef is from the U.S. and New Zealand, lamb is from the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, venison is imported from Australia and New Zealand, and the rabbit is imported from France and Italy. They are very stringent in their sourcing standards and prioritize building close relationships with the vendors.

What is "Montmorillonite Clay" and is it harmful?
Answer by ChewyOct 18, 2017
Montmorillonite is a clay that helps with anti-caking. Made primarily of colloidal silicate, it contains over 50 ultra-trace mineral compounds. This ingredient is safe for pets to consume.

Do they use non GMO peas and other vegetables?
Answer by ChewyMar 11, 2018
This product is not GMO-free.

What is the taurine content on a dry matter basis?
Answer by ChewyMay 07, 2020
Instinct does not test for taurine in any of their formulas. Meat naturally contains a lot of taurine through amino acids methionine and cysteine and is the primary source of naturally derived taurine. Because their recipes are meat-rich at Instinct, all recipes have more than adequate levels of these naturally-occurring amino acids given the amount of animal ingredients they include. Because taurine naturally occurs in their recipes, they do not need to supplement with taurine in their diets.

Formula changed

My cat has been loving this food for years. This winter they were out of the 3 oz cans so I had to get the 5.5 oz cans. Food was hard, like a hockey puck. He reluctantly ate it. Finally, the 3 oz cans were back in stock! Unfortunately, the formula changed again, this time to a pudding-like texture. So disgusting, my cat will barely touch that. I’m at a loss. What happened to the old formula, soft pate with gravy? The larger cans are too hard, the smaller cans are too soft and Goldilocks over here is looking for “just right!” Big time fail, instinct!

Formula Changed-Cat won't touch

This is the only brand my cat with IBD would eat. It obviously has more guar gum in it now than before. The color, texture, and smell is completely different. Before it was a pate', now it is a puree' like pudding. My cat basically laughed at me when I put it down for him to eat. I'm unfortunately now on a stressful and expensive hunt again for a food he will eat. It's a bummer that a company would change a perfectly good formula.

Recipe Changed for the Worse

All the latest reviews are correct. It is now light brown goop and the cats won't touch it. In the past they loved it. It was one of the few things they could eat with their food allergies. So disappointed.

My cat refuses to eat it

I think the cans are old. Usually the food is soft and juicy but the cans I received had hard, dry looking food. Also, many of the cans I've ordered lately have arrived dented so had to be tossed.

Recipe change

Up until recently I would have given 5 stars. As others have mentioned, the consistency has changed to a denser formula, with less peas and carrots and instead of a broth-like liquid a gelatinous gross goo. An email to Instinct customer service gave a vague unsatisfactory response to explain the changes.

Recipe Changed

It appears as though instinct changed their recipe. I just got this and it looks like they replaced turkey with chicken and also put guar gum instead of the clay. My cat can't have chicken so I will be requesting a refund. So disappointed since my cat has been eating this for years.

This is a NO GO

I liked the ingredient list, especially what's not in the food. But the cats are rating this one 0 stars, they won't touch it. It's very dense and dry in consistency and the cats don't even like the smell and walk right away. Another one ending up as dog kibble topper. Dog doesn't mind it, so it's not going to waste.

Love this!

One of my 4 furbabies has a lot of allergies: no potato, seafood, corn, or egg. And let me tell you, finding quality cat food without any of these ingredients is really challenging. On of top that, he is really picky with his food! This duck recipe plus the instinct protein dry are a hit! He loves it and always cleans up his bowl. 2 paws up + highly recommended!!

Was Good but Inedible Now...

Cats adored this food for about a year and a half, but the last few shipments I've gotten have been consistently of a different, more firm texture. Cats balk the food now, after a year and a half of no problems, and I'm left with two cases of expensive cat food they refuse to eat. It's a shame! They really liked it. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the formula having changed or what, but I'm really disappointed.

Not Good For the Price

I started feeding Instinct to my cat Bea after doing some research and trying to find something healthy and good for cats with a sensitive stomach. At first it was okay and came in a gravy, but they transitioned recently to packaging the food in this disgusting goo/gel. I feel like I have to scoop it out as much as possible bc I don't want to feed my cat a mystery goop. There are also tons of chunks of bone in every can, which can't be good. Ultimately switching to a brand that will better suit her needs and that I feel will actually be healthy for her.
