New Formula- Cats Say No, No, No

We have been feeding our cats this brand for years. They have changed the formula without giving customers a heads-up, which every cat owner knows is a must due to a cat's sensitivity to food changes. Very poor form on the company's part. It now has guar gum, which my IBS cats can't tolerate. The flavor panel has changed as well, and my other cats won't eat it anymore. They used to love it. Cats were also having diarrhea and vomiting. I couldn't figure out what was going on until I picked up the label, read it and saw the changes. Then went to the Internet to see what was going on. THANKFULLY, Chewy is awesome and has accepted the return of the new formula cans. I can always count on Chey even when I can't count on pet food manufacturers. I am now on the hunt for new food for sensitive and picky eaters.

Won't even smell it....not pleased!

I adopted a cat who ate only dry kibble two years ago. Finding a wet food & protein she was willing to accept and eat without vomiting was a real challenge! When we finally settled with Instinct duck, I was okay with it, at least temporarily. Every time I allow her to eat chicken, dry or wet, there's a problem about three days in. Sure enough, the other reviews I read about a change in formula, the addition of chicken and cats rejecting it were real. Thanks to those who took the time to write about this so I had a heads-up. We're searching again for something healthy and that she will want to eat. It's very frustrating when manufacturers can't produce a quality product without the "ugly" ingredients cats were never made to eat.

First Chicken, now Duck

Is Instinct planning to move all of their food production to Thailand? I got the first batch of their spoiled-smelling, glutinous chicken about seven months ago, and today got a batch of duck that smells and looks just about the same. My cat won’t eat it, and now I’m stuck with a bunch of expensive food I wouldn’t give to a stray. Time to start looking for a new brand of food—I don’t trust Instinct anymore.

all cans dented

I liked this cat food because it had duck and no chicken for my cats with IBD. I'm leaving this review because ALL 24 cans I received were dented even though the packaging was fine. This means that the company, Instinct, shipped questionable product to Chewy (I feel like this happens a lot with online shopping). Since my cat can eat it, I was going to continue buying it, BUT I just noticed in other reviews that they recently changed the formula to add chicken without telling anyone (and I was getting this through autoship)!! So, I will not be buying it again - VERY disappointed. Lastly, I was going to say that I didn't really like all of the duck bones (sometimes they're a bit big) and my cats don't like the whole peas, but now I guess it doesn't matter :(

Awful - Formula Change, Very Disappointed!!!

Instinct Duck was our cats' favorite for many years. We were not aware of the formula change until we received the latest batch from Chewy. Food looked and smelled very different and none of our cats would touch it. Then we noticed the label shows "Product of Thailand" (v.s. "Made in the U.S.") and ingredients are drastically different. It is a shame that Nature's Variety did not inform its customers about this ingredient and formula change. Will not buy this again unless they bring back the original formula.

Cats Love it!

I have recently changed meat proteins for my cats. They eat nothing but wet food! I have been an Instinct brand buyer for many many years, but decided to give them something other than chicken. I try and stick with a natural carnivore diet as much as possible just fur and feathers! They absolutely loved the this duck pate. The definitely cleaned their bowls. High in protein and up to Instinct quality.

New formula - Can won't eat it

I initially thought I just got an off batch when I switched to the 3.5 oz cans. Unfortunately I got this new formula with my latest 5oz can order as well. The texture is mush, off color, and my cat walks away from it. She'll try it if she's hungry, but leaves most in the dish to rot. Very disappointed and now I'm stuck with 3 cases of expensive catfood. The addition of chicken in something that was initially only duck with no alert on the can of a new formula is concerning as well, not all cats can take chicken as a protein (The reason I chose this food in the first place). Glad Chewy is carrying Fussie cat again, I'll be switching and the local feral cats hopefully like overly mashed duck/chicken.

The cats love it!!!!

It is great by itself or to mix with their dry food like I do. As soon as I grab one they are already meowing like crazy and waiting for me to make their food. They get like this with a lot of canned food but they are definitely more into this one than most others. The consistency is like a little mushy-they love it!

Added Guar Gum. Disappointed!

They recently added guar gum to all their wet food... even the limited ingredient ones! Very disappointed! Now I have to find a new food for my cats.

New vs Old, fight!

I have gotten the old and new formulas. My big boi (15 pounds), likes both of them. The old formula has a junkier consistency with visible bits of (whole) peas and (diced) carrots in it while the new formula has a much smoother, more traditional pate texture with no visible veggies. The old formula, due to it's consistency, tended to have a little more water and less food, while the new formula fills the entire can. I believe in changing up flavors, and sometimes brands, for my cats so they don't get bored of their food. Because I cycle through several different flavors, my cat is less inclined to reject his food just because it's "different". That said, Instinct did their customer base (human and cat) wrong by not showing clearly on the can there was a change in INGREDIENTS. In the USA formula, there is 0% chicken while the new formula has chicken as it's 2nd & 3rd ingredient. (Cost saving measure anyone?) If someone has a cat with chicken allergies, they wouldn't know until after feeding their cat there was chicken in the new formula! Tsk tsk, not cool Instinct! They should have made the new formula a NEW LINE OF FOOD! Call it Extra Fine Pate or something, but treat it as a separate product BECAUSE IT IS.
