IRIS redesigned their playpen panels to work without the rod. This makes the panels much weaker and with the slightest pressure from a dog jumping on them or a human tripping and hitting them, they will come apart. This is a very insecure and cheap set up compared to the rod system which was much more easy and convenient to work with and allowed for sets of varying heights to be combined much more effectively. IRIS really messed up on this one.

To increase the play room for your dog, these add-on panels are nice. The downside as others have mentioned is the stability— it tends to be very unstable. We added wooden dowels on outside to support/brace the unit. The manufacturer could use a revamp to the design as the unit must be placed against something for stability.
