Use this heater to keep my horse's water from freezing and it has done a great job. Like the small size and the fact it is not integral to the bucket, make cleaning the water bucket each week less of a chore. Only issue is the length of the cord, it would be better if it were about 18" longer.
Lost power for 6 hours and I'm assuming that when the water froze it broke the element. Other than that good product for keeping fresh water from freezing.
Have 16 gallon horse bucket and this works fantastic BUT the clamp is garbage! Horse broke it within an hour!
We used this item in a rubber black 2 1/2 gallon bucket using a 100 foot 14 awg extension cord. We had a spell where it got -1 to -14F at night. It was a closed in area on a cement and Icy floor. It did freeze to 1" on the top of the bucket, We broke the ice, filled up the bucket with more water and it was fine except for the nights that were extremely cold as listed above. This has been the best heater of all we have tried including blue dog water bowls, plug in black rubber buckets and a plug in green plastic bucket. We are satisfied with this product.
I’ve had and used this for two years now. I leave it plugged in and mounted in a hanging water pail that has nipples. This keeps the water from freezing and the chickens can easily access water from the nipples.
We have had this heater now a few months and it has been outstanding at keeping our 3 gal plastic water bucket fluid for our chickens and dogs! Our temps have been some of the coldest I remember here in pa. with sustained sub zero temps.. Real work saver and we will buy another one if/when something happens to this guy.
I was so excited to get these because I hate hauling frozen water buckets in the winter. First few days they were great but temps were in the 20s. Cold blast this week and we are below zero and I have frozen buckets again with a heater frozen in the giant ice cube. Took 8 hours in the warm house with the bucket heater plugged in to thaw them out. Would not recommend for my area but they are probably ok for milder temps
I bought this item when it was on sale and just used it for the first time last week. I gave it a couple tries to see if it would improve and it hasn’t. When weather was just starting to freeze, the ice was noticeable in the bottom of the bucket. The salt water in a water bottle actually held off the ice longer than this. Freezing weather it didn’t work at all. The box says it works for us up to 16 gal and my chicken waterer is only 5 gal. I was hopeful that this would save me money from buying another bucket heater since those have to be filled more frequently, but it doesn’t look like it worked out for me. Maybe others have had better luck or I did something incorrectly.
If it was around 32°, it worked. But anything colder than that and my water would still freeze. I have a 15 gallon water bucket that I was using this in for the dogs. I ended up just taking it out and filling a separate bowl up for them when it would freeze.
Seems to be doing its job just fine to keep our chickens' water from being frozen, while not making the water too hot to drink. It recommends not using an extension cord, but for us, this has worked fine so far.
