Does this go in the water? Or under the bucket?

The Ultimate Bucket Heater is only designed to be plugged in when it is submerged in water. It will not turn off automatically if there is no water. Never plug the unit in unless the heating element is completely submerged in water. Otherwise, the unit will be damaged.
What are the cycle on/cycle off temperatures?

Internal thermostats automatically monitor water temperature and turn the unit on and off to keep the average water temperature just above freezing. The unique technology ensures that your de-icer will only run as often as needed.

Do you recommend running the cord through a metal pipe to keep it encased so it doesn't flop around?

We do not recommend running the cord through a metal pipe or a metal conduit. Metal can create abrasion points over time, potentially damage the cord’s insulation, and may pose a safety risk, especially in damp or outdoor environments.
K&h Pet Products' general recommendations are as follows:
Allow the cord to hang freely or be gently secured using non-metallic clips or fasteners.
If cord protection is necessary, customers may use a non-metal protective covering (such as flexible plastic conduit or PVC tubing) that does not pinch, compress, or rub against the cord.
Avoid running the cord through any rigid material that could retain heat or cause wear.
Always plug the unit directly into a properly grounded GFCI outlet and avoid using extension cords.
Regularly inspect the cord for signs of damage and discontinue use if any wear is observed.
