great filter

These are a really great low tech filter. When I first started in the hobby, I went with a hob because that’s what everybody said you “should” use. My power goes out a lot and every time all my hob filters would drain out and I would come home to them running dry. I then switched to course sponge filters which are great and the power fluctuations don’t bother them. They do what they are suppose to do and can be moved around but my water was never crystal clear. A few years ago I saw a review for undergravel filters and decided to try it in one tank. They are a real pain to install in an established tank but I have to say it was worth it. My parameters are spot on and the water stays crystal clear. I already had the air pumps, line and stones from the sponge filters so it was easy to set up. I now run them in 4 out of 5 tanks and also run a course sponge filter in addition to the tanks that also have shrimp. All of my tanks are heavily planted and the plants do great. I gravel vac the same amount I did before using the undergravel filter. I am not sure what all the internet hate for these filters is all about but I love them so much more than hob filters and I don’t have to worry about too much current in the tanks or changing filter floss or cartridges or worry my power flickered again while I’m at work. They might be old tech but they are easy and they work.
