While this filter can be used with live plants, it was not designed to be used with sand or gravel with pieces smaller than 1/8".

The filtration device sounds like one is at the bottom of a powerful and uncontrollable dam gushing waters. The system does little to filter excrement out of the gravel. The vibration and sound stressed my fish. So, I disconnected the system. Yes, I asked if I could return the $100+ system. Chewy said yes but now I need to remove 40 pounds of rock off two of these in my 125 gallon tank. Dry the filters off, disable them, box them up, and FedEx them back to Chewy. This is my review--a warning I wish I would have had. I paid over $100 each for these filters and they are loud and useless.

Best undergravel set up!

No more base tubes that snap off or are hard to clean. Very sturdy one piece base, built it up tubes! I wish I would have used this one originally!

I have used Lees for decades and already knew they were the best. I needed an under-gravel filter for my new (actually replacement) 75 gallon tank. The only negative thing I have to say is the 90 gallon and 75 are the same. Look at the size and you'll see they are the same in area. I bought the 90 gallon filter knowing that, but most consumers are not as savvy as me. And on more thing, it comes with two sections. The rep who says it's only one piece does not know his business.

These are a really great low tech filter. When I first started in the hobby, I went with a hob because that’s what everybody said you “should” use. My power goes out a lot and every time all my hob filters would drain out and I would come home to them running dry. I then switched to course sponge filters which are great and the power fluctuations don’t bother them. They do what they are suppose to do and can be moved around but my water was never crystal clear. A few years ago I saw a review for undergravel filters and decided to try it in one tank. They are a real pain to install in an established tank but I have to say it was worth it. My parameters are spot on and the water stays crystal clear. I already had the air pumps, line and stones from the sponge filters so it was easy to set up. I now run them in 4 out of 5 tanks and also run a course sponge filter in addition to the tanks that also have shrimp. All of my tanks are heavily planted and the plants do great. I gravel vac the same amount I did before using the undergravel filter. I am not sure what all the internet hate for these filters is all about but I love them so much more than hob filters and I don’t have to worry about too much current in the tanks or changing filter floss or cartridges or worry my power flickered again while I’m at work. They might be old tech but they are easy and they work.
