Save your money. These filters are pure garbage. They always loose a prime. I had to contact Spectrum and they shipped me a new one. A month later and the same problem. I contacted Spectrum again and the speak to you like a 3 year old. I been in the fish hobby for over 15 years never seen such a crappy filter. The are also expensive to run. Do yourself a favor and get an aquaclear 110. You will save money in the long run. Tust me.

I have owned Marineland Bio-wheel filters for many years and in different sizes as I own many aquarium sizes. I used the Emperor 400 on my 33 gallon tank. ( I have owned 2 of this size now this is my third one). I have only had one unit that is "fickle" about running as it should which I believe has something to do with the impellor which I have replaced and seems to have fixed the issue of the water not continually flowing through the sprayer bars. This has been my ONLY downside of the Emperor 400. You can see I have purchased another one as my backup. The timing was right with Chewey's pricing as well to get a back up for the future "Just in case". I know not all people like the same items but, THIS is a Favorite Filter system for me.

This is the 2nd or 3 rd filter of the same kind and brand that I’ve gotten for the same tank. These filters used to be adjustable and last forever. Now, I don’t know if it’s a different design or impeller but they sure don’t last like they used too!
In the past, these were better made, and quieter.

I returned this due to the noise. It was very loud. I also noticed that the plastic is very thin. In the past, the plastic was much thicker, there were windows to view the bio wheels, actually turning, and they were much more quiet. After returning this model I purchased a marine land Emperor 450 Pro model. It is much better made. It is also decently quiet. I would highly recommend spending a little bit more money and getting the 450 pro version.
