About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Questions & Answers

Why are there tiny holes in one of the six openings?

Answer by ChewyJun 26, 2025
The holes are simply part of the design and provide ventilation; they don't serve any specific functional purpose.

Does it make noise?

Answer by ChewyFeb 18, 2025
None of the toys in this set make noise. The treat dispenser is designed for interactive play, and the chipmunks are soft plush toys without any squeakers or sound effects.

I have a saint Bernard who had surgery today because she had one of the chipmunks stuck in her bowel. I feel so terrible, we only let her play with it while we were watching, we kept it up and away from her-we thought. Somehow she did manage to get it and we could have lost her. I'm not saying no one should use it, just please please always supervise closer than you think you even need to and place it where your dog cant find it. I'm feeling terribly guilty and want to just encourage others to be very diligent.

Great toy! You control the difficulty

My dog loves this toy. He has a thing for squirrels. You can adjust the difficulty in how you shove the squirrel in, if you let some of the tail stick out or not

My pup loved this puzzle!

Not only does it keep her occupied for 10-15 minutes, she loves to play with the chipmunks after she's completed the puzzle. I wholeheartedly recommend this puz

So much fun but a little difficult for medium to small dogs

I have to barely push the squirrels in because my dog is only 30 lbs. I knew it would be a little big for him, but I also knew he would love it, so I got it anyway

I have to barely push the squirrels in because my dog is only 30 lbs. I knew it would be a little big for him, but I also knew he would love it, so I got it anyway. He does LOVE it. It takes him a little while to swing it around to get the squirrels out. You can REALLY get them stuck in there.

My dog’s favorite!

This is one of my dog’s favorite toys! It’s held up really well to her super chewing and is easy to clean.

Didn’t last more than a day

But it did last an hour. which is GOOD for my dog. Problem was she liked to rip the plastic just as much as the little animals

Dogs don’t get it

The plush toys fit in very tight. My dogs don’t seem to understand the amount of force necessary to pull them out.

Entertaining!

A great enrichment toy. Would recommend always using with supervision so the chipmunks or their fur don’t get eaten! Our girl’s jaw is almost the exact same size

A great enrichment toy. Would recommend always using with supervision so the chipmunks or their fur don’t get eaten! Our girl’s jaw is almost the exact same size as the holes on the ball, so again I just always watch her playing with it so it never gets stuck in there.
