Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosequin® for Dogs?

Cosequin is a patented, scientifically researched nutritional supplement dispensed by thousands of veterinarians to help dogs maintain healthy joints. As dogs age, it is common for their joints to become less flexible which impacts their mobility and quality of life. You may have noticed that your dog has difficulty walking up stairs or jumping on the bed. While he used to be eager to play, now he is content to rest. Even at younger ages some dogs are subject to joint health concerns which affect flexibility and mobility. Cosequin contains TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49®* glucosamine and manganese ascorbate. These ingredients have been scientifically formulated to support and maintain the health of your dog's joints. Published studies have shown that the specific combination of ingredients in Cosequin works together to maintain the structure of the cartilage in your dog's joints while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage. It is very important to note that the published studies on Cosequin do not apply to other brands.

When is the use of Cosequin® recommended?

Early action is always the best advice. Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. With regular check-ups your veterinarian can talk with you about your dog’s aging process. Your veterinarian may discuss weight control, selective use of medications, exercise and the administration of Cosequin. It is important to have your dog examined by your veterinarian if you notice the dog having difficulties climbing stairs, jumping into the car, going for walks or even getting up. Your veterinarian can advise you if Cosequin can help. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Cosequin as a protective measure. This can be important for maintaining an active life for many dogs, especially large breeds and working dogs of all sizes. Cosequin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery.

My pet just started taking Cosequin®. What should I notice?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether he seems more comfortable performing everyday activities such as climbing up stairs, going for walks, or even getting up. Most people will observe gradual changes in their dog’s comfort level. In a published survey of over 3,000 veterinarians, over 80% of dogs administered Cosequin improved significantly in their mobility, level of comfort, and attitude. Overall, the veterinarians rated Cosequin as good to excellent.

How long does it take Cosequin® to work?

Since Cosequin is a supplement and provides nutrients to maintain your dog’s joint health, it works more gradually than drugs. Improvement on Cosequin can range from gradual to dramatic. Following the administration schedule on the label for your dog’s weight, we recommend an initial administration period of four to six weeks. Some dogs may show a response in a shorter period of time.

Should I give Cosequin® to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Are there any side effects?

A safety study in dogs demonstrated no adverse effects of Cosequin administration on blood work parameters, including complete blood count, biochemical, and clotting values. Some dogs may experience a mild gastrointestinal upset such as that which occurs when switching foods. If this is the case, you can try offering Cosequin with a meal.

Should I exercise my dog while he is on Cosequin®?

Exercise is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control for the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures break down at a rapid rate. Consult with your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

  • Good stuff

My Black Lab is over 11 years old and I give this to him every morning. Since I started he is no longer licking his sore joints and his walking has definitely improved. I've been buying Cosequin products for +20 years and I wouldn't give my dogs anything else. I am glad Chewy offers a larger package at a reasonable price. Cosequin isn't "cheap" but my baby is worth it!

  • Great product

I was impressed with the formula of this product as it contained exactly what my vet. suggested. The only downside for me is that my dogs do not take the chews as "treats" and will sometimes even leave them in their food. They are not chow hounds and do not like all treats or will not eat at all if they are not hungry--they are able to self-regulate and be on ad lib feeding which is good until you want to get meds or supplements down them.

  • Young or old, give it every day!

    By on

I've tried many over the years and this one is the best! My collie/gsd mix lived to 17 yrs and giving him this supplement from the day I adopted him (at 1yr old) is a key to why. He developed arthritis as many dogs eventually do but remained very mobile until the end. My youngest is very picky about eating supplements of any kind but even she LOVES the taste of the soft chews! Don't wait for symptoms to start, keep them on it for life!

  • Great results!!

    By on

My 8yr old doggie has torn her ACL and her Vet recommended a joint supplement... (along with surgery of course). While browsing the site for a supplement, I chose this product and it certainly did NOT disappoint! She's a little more than 60lbs so per the instructions I was giving her 3 chews daily and Man oh man, the difference this supplement has made! Her walking has improved, although her mobility isn't 100%, it has definitely improved and this product was definitely effective. Two thumbs and four paws way up!!!

  • Chewy vitamins

    By on

My dog Sam wouldn't eat the tablet form of Cosequin but has no problem taking these chewy ones! I would recommend them to anyone who's dog has hip/joint problems. And the fact that I can get them sent to my door for cheaper than I can buy them at pet stores is an added boost.

  • Excellent product

I have a corgi. And, like all long bodied dogs, she started to have hip issues. She has been on Cosequin for 6 months now, and oh what a difference! She's back to running with her younger fur siblings, again!! I highly recommend this and Chewy!!

  • Little too hard to chew for a chewable treat

    By on

My pup absolutely loves these and they're better than the chewable vitamin version...however, the first bag I bought of these are very hard! My girl can barely chew them and I have to moisten & squish them prior to giving to her. They can be pricey, so I wish they were soft as they supposed to be.

  • Super Easy!

    By on

I have four dogs, ages 12,11,6, and 1. Our youngest was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia, and we were told to start her on a joint treatment. With the other three showing signs of some stiff joints, I decided to get all of them on something. It was difficult to find something that worked for all four, of varying sizes. Then I found this product! Life saver. I give them treats everyday anyway, so it was an easy way to get it to them. They all enjoy it, and the different dosing for the different sizes is so easy. After two weeks, we are already seeing some improvement.

  • Yum Coseqin!

    By on

My dog loves these! She's 80lbs so she takes 3 a day but she eats them like treats. She hasn't quite been on them a month, so as far as their effectiveness..I can't speak to that yet but they go down very easily which is a plus!
