Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosequin® for Dogs?

Cosequin is a patented, scientifically researched nutritional supplement dispensed by thousands of veterinarians to help dogs maintain healthy joints. As dogs age, it is common for their joints to become less flexible which impacts their mobility and quality of life. You may have noticed that your dog has difficulty walking up stairs or jumping on the bed. While he used to be eager to play, now he is content to rest. Even at younger ages some dogs are subject to joint health concerns which affect flexibility and mobility. Cosequin contains TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49®* glucosamine and manganese ascorbate. These ingredients have been scientifically formulated to support and maintain the health of your dog's joints. Published studies have shown that the specific combination of ingredients in Cosequin works together to maintain the structure of the cartilage in your dog's joints while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage. It is very important to note that the published studies on Cosequin do not apply to other brands.

When is the use of Cosequin® recommended?

Early action is always the best advice. Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. With regular check - ups your veterinarian can talk with you about your dog’s aging process. Your veterinarian may discuss weight control, selective use of medications, exercise and the administration of Cosequin. It is important to have your dog examined by your veterinarian if you notice the dog having difficulties climbing stairs, jumping into the car, going for walks or even getting up. Your veterinarian can advise you if Cosequin can help. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Cosequin as a protective measure. This can be important for maintaining an active life for many dogs, especially large breeds and working dogs of all sizes. Cosequin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery.

My pet just started taking Cosequin®. What should I notice?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether he seems more comfortable performing everyday activities such as climbing up stairs, going for walks, or even getting up. Most people will observe gradual changes in their dog’s comfort level. In a published survey of over 3,000 veterinarians, over 80% of dogs administered Cosequin improved significantly in their mobility, level of comfort, and attitude. Overall, the veterinarians rated Cosequin as good to excellent.

How long does it take Cosequin® to work?

Since Cosequin is a supplement and provides nutrients to maintain your dog’s joint health, it works more gradually than drugs. Improvement on Cosequin can range from gradual to dramatic. Following the administration schedule on the label for your dog’s weight, we recommend an initial administration period of 4 - 6 weeks. Some dogs may show a response in a shorter period of time.

Should I give Cosequin® to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Are there any side effects?

A safety study in dogs demonstrated no adverse effects of Cosequin administration on blood work parameters, including complete blood count, biochemical, and clotting values. Some dogs may experience a mild gastrointestinal upset such as that which occurs when switching foods. If this is the case, you can try offering Cosequin with a meal.

Should I exercise my dog while he is on Cosequin®?

Exercise is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control for the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures break down at a rapid rate. Consult with your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

  • Pretty good non-RX chew

    By on

I have a senior lab with hip issues. My dog was taking an RX glucosamine chew which was pretty expensive. My vet actually recommended Cosequin as a budget friendly solution to keep to her on something. I just toss them in her food every morning and she eats it without hesitation. She does eat around any other medicine that I try to mix in the bowl, so if she eats this it must taste ok for her!

  • Wonderful Product!

    By on

My Wheaten terrier has been suffering from arthritis for the past 2 years. I used to buy the pressed tablet Cosequin, but, as of late, my dog would just spit them out. I didn't want to resort to my vet's suggestion of administering prednisone. So, when I saw that the soft chews were available, I jumped on it. My doggie loves them. I just mention Cosequin and she comes running. It has restored her mobility and she is so much happier. Love this product!

  • Great for My Girls

    By on

I have 2 labradoodles who have been on a Cosequin supplement for several years. They would take the pill, reluctantly, and one would chew it up, while the other would swallow it whole. I tried these and, although they are somewhat smelly, both of my girls LOVE them. They take it happily and actually chew it up! Fantastic! I recommend highly!

  • English bulldog and stairs

    By on

Our 5 year old English bulldog has never been fond of the stairs and living in a three story house it creates a bit of a challenge. I decided to try the cosequin as I’ve had success with the product with other pets. Amazing after just a few days she is joyfully making the trek to the main floor.

  • More mobility

    By on

My aussie/lab was starting to have issues jumping up on the bed and down. She will be 7 in May but was hit as a pup on her front right leg. So am sure arthritis is setting in, but she has been on the cosequin for approximately two weeks and I can tell a difference already. She does not seem as hesitant to make that jump. I hope that this just gets better as time goes on. I would recommend the cosequin as I have seen a difference in a short period of time.

As my female chocolate Lab Billie approaches her 11 th birthday soon, her active days were slowing down! After just one week on Cosequin, she has become that active , "retrieving " girl from years back! Great to see her moving so well again in her senior years!

  • Dog loves them

    By on

My dog hit senior status this year, and at her yearly checkup her vet recommended a joint supplement for prevention. My dog is finicky about any sort of meds or supplements that come in tablet form, so I went right ahead and ordered the chews. She takes them willingly with her daily thyroid medication! I am always pleased with a product she will willingly eat. She doesn't show signs of arthritis yet so I cannot speak to how they work to treat existing issues, but she does seem to have a little more pep in her step. Beware that these chews do have a strong fish smell as they are fortified with fish oil, but as a pet owner I'm pretty used to strong smelling food/treats.

  • Vet recommended

    By on

My dogs are seniors and all feeling their ages. We have stairs and its harder for them to get up and down. The vet recommended Cosequin and it really helps. It took a few weeks and then I noticed how they were moving around a little better. Now they are moving much better. Glad we tried it. We ordered with free shipping, and it came just like they said. Good service too.

  • Just what we needed

    By on

These glucosamine treats are working wonderfully! We had to switch my 9 yr old Aussie mix off of a food containing glucosamine due to an allergy, so I needed to find a supplement. He loves them and he is moving at normal speed again. He tends to have a sensitive stomach, but we give these at mealtime and haven't noticed any issues.
