Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosequin® for Dogs?

Cosequin is a patented, scientifically researched nutritional supplement dispensed by thousands of veterinarians to help dogs maintain healthy joints. As dogs age, it is common for their joints to become less flexible which impacts their mobility and quality of life. You may have noticed that your dog has difficulty walking up stairs or jumping on the bed. While he used to be eager to play, now he is content to rest. Even at younger ages some dogs are subject to joint health concerns which affect flexibility and mobility. Cosequin contains TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49®* glucosamine and manganese ascorbate. These ingredients have been scientifically formulated to support and maintain the health of your dog's joints. Published studies have shown that the specific combination of ingredients in Cosequin works together to maintain the structure of the cartilage in your dog's joints while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage. It is very important to note that the published studies on Cosequin do not apply to other brands.

When is the use of Cosequin® recommended?

Early action is always the best advice. Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. With regular check-ups your veterinarian can talk with you about your dog’s aging process. Your veterinarian may discuss weight control, selective use of medications, exercise and the administration of Cosequin. It is important to have your dog examined by your veterinarian if you notice the dog having difficulties climbing stairs, jumping into the car, going for walks or even getting up. Your veterinarian can advise you if Cosequin can help. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Cosequin as a protective measure. This can be important for maintaining an active life for many dogs, especially large breeds and working dogs of all sizes. Cosequin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery.

My pet just started taking Cosequin®. What should I notice?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether he seems more comfortable performing everyday activities such as climbing up stairs, going for walks, or even getting up. Most people will observe gradual changes in their dog’s comfort level. In a published survey of over 3,000 veterinarians, over 80% of dogs administered Cosequin improved significantly in their mobility, level of comfort, and attitude. Overall, the veterinarians rated Cosequin as good to excellent.

How long does it take Cosequin® to work?

Since Cosequin is a supplement and provides nutrients to maintain your dog’s joint health, it works more gradually than drugs. Improvement on Cosequin can range from gradual to dramatic. Following the administration schedule on the label for your dog’s weight, we recommend an initial administration period of four to six weeks. Some dogs may show a response in a shorter period of time.

Should I give Cosequin® to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Are there any side effects?

A safety study in dogs demonstrated no adverse effects of Cosequin administration on blood work parameters, including complete blood count, biochemical, and clotting values. Some dogs may experience a mild gastrointestinal upset such as that which occurs when switching foods. If this is the case, you can try offering Cosequin with a meal.

Should I exercise my dog while he is on Cosequin®?

Exercise is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control for the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures break down at a rapid rate. Consult with your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

  • Best Supplement for Joints

    By on

My 12 year old Yorkie has had chronic issues with subluxing patellas and ACL issues most of his life. Although standard medical treatment has offered periodic relief, I have found that a daily maintenance dose of Cosequin has really helped support his joints and helped his discomfort from the daily pressure he has just trying to walk...he loves the taste and thinks it is a treat!

  • Worth a shot

What we love about this supplement is that it's in treat form! No more trying to get my dog to take a pill. When my dog first tried them she wasn't sure about the taste but now she absolutely loves them! They do have a very strong scent. I love that these have Omega-3's in them to help keep her coat shiny and healthy. Before we started taking them, her joints would pop when she would get up and she was slower going up stairs. Now there is no more popping and she climbs stairs with ease! We like staying active so I love that this supplement has helped her so much.

  • Smells yummy and my picky dog agrees!

My older dog has weak knees and has started to show signs of arthritis. The vet recommended soft chews over hard tablets, which is what Pebbles had taken using the same brand. She would not eat the hard tablets without being mixed with something else delicious. However, she loves the soft chews. I no longer have to deal with the trouble of getting her to take her supplements now. Not only that, it smells really good and fresh! I love the smell of fish and squid so does Pebbles. With that said, so far I have not seen any drastic improvements using Cosequin in both forms. It's been almost a month and her bad knee isn't as lame. Either way, like all supplements, this is a buyer beware product as it is still not a cheap item to purchase, even from Chewy. Buy this supplement if you can afford to do so and with little to no expectations that it will help your dog. It will most certainly NOT cure your dog's bad joints. … more

  • good joint supplement

Actually I have been giving my dog the white tablets and by mistake ordered these chewys but she doesn't mind. She is 15 and I believe that without this supplement she would be having more difficulty getting around than she does.

  • Beagle, almost 12, now jumping off bed!

    By on

I've been giving this supplement to my beagle named Gracie who will be 12 next month twice per day only about 2 weeks or maybe less now. She has actually been leaping off of the bed when it's time to go out instead of sliding down the side!

We've also used the tablets for our baby. She LOVES these chews and takes them like a treat every night. Cosequin helps our baby's joints feel better and she moves much easier.

  • Cosequin better then GlycoFlex 3

    By on

I put my 14 year old dog on GlycoFlex 3 and after 2 months it didn't seem to work well at all. I then decided to try Cosequin Maximum Strength. Within 1 week my dog was no longer in pain and now after 2 weeks is acting almost like a puppy again. No pain and full of energy. I am so glad I decided to try this. I highly recommend this product for your animals. Happy dog mom.

  • Smelly stuff but the dogs like it!

    By on

These are soft chews about the size of Rollo candies and are easy to cut in half. As stinky as they smell, both my dogs eat them up. We have been on them for 2 weeks and no difference seen yet (subluxating patella) but will wait out the 4-6 weeks it takes to see any improvement.

  • Cosequin Chews and Tablets

    By on

My two Brittany's LOVE the soft chew and the tablets! They think they are getting treats. My vet also said that I made very good choices for my 9 and 12 year old dogs. It is still to early to see any difference yet, but I am hoping. My girls would give it a 5 rating. LOVE THE CHEWY SERVICE!!!!
