The HORROR of it

I have owned animals for over 50 years and have never had an experience like this with any dog food. Or any animal domestic or farm for that matter. I am extremely careful about what I feed my dogs and always choose high quality food. I introduced this food very slowly over several days, exactly as recommended. Despite that, both dogs developed severe diarrhea. In addition to the diarrhea, what stools that were solid was inflated to twice the normal size, indicative of a grain heavy, low digestibility, low quality food formula. For a food at this price point, that is unacceptable. Symptoms fully resolved within 24 hours of discontinuation. I know this was caused by this food. These are six month old farm dogs they eat grass, chew on hickory nuts, and occasionally grab random outdoor debris like every other country dog on the planet. When I adopted them, they were eating brand name but discount food. That has never caused anything like this. What happened here was sudden, identical in both dogs, and unmistakable: the exact same yellow/tan desert color as the food itself. Both dogs were hit at the same time, with the same symptoms, and that color is now permanently burned into my memory. I never want to see that shade of yellow again in my life. I used to like that color. I truly never want to encounter it again. After this happened, I went back and read the reviews more carefully and noticed multiple other reviews mentioning loose stools and digestive upset, which tells me this was not an isolated reaction. What made this truly horrific was the context. I am currently living in and remodeling a rural house. There is no working shower, only a tiny bar sink upstairs, and the only other water source is a hookup to the washer outlet downstairs. I also have to haul all clothes and bedding to a laundromat. This wasn’t just an inconvenience. It became a logistical nightmare. Cleaning meant hauling contaminated items up and down stairs in freezing weather with limited water and no easy way to sanitize anything properly. I ultimately threw away multiple dog beds because I honestly didn’t believe any washer made could clean them adequately. This was one of the most stressful, exhausting, and miserable experiences I’ve ever had related to pet food. I do not leave reviews lightly, but this was bad enough that I feel obligated to warn others, especially anyone living rurally, remodeling, traveling, or without easy access to laundry and water. This food may work for some dogs, but based on both my experience and the clear pattern reflected in other reviews, it was an absolute disaster for mine.

I have used Origin for all of my GSD. For my new puppy, after the blending time changing food, she started itching. She did not want to eat it and had to go to the vet for meds to try to stop the itching. It was not fleas. I switched her food and she’s doing much ch better. Still love origin.

I searched for a very long time for a food I felt good about feeding my puppy. I knew I wasn’t prepared to create raw or from-scratch meals for him, but the ingredients in Orijen foods are wonderful. They are full of real animal proteins, fruits, veggies, and grains that make sense! I do add raw meat or organs most days and feed fresh berries and yogurt as treats. I feel really good about what my pup is eating and he has solid poops, a beautiful coat, and no signs of allergies.

My picky dog loves it

I think my dog likes this better than the grain free one. Doesn’t give her an upset tummy or constipation. I think I might stick with this kibble!
