About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

My dog loves this

The only complaint I have is that he figured it out too fast. Golden Retriever male 10 1/2 months old. However, it is still his favorite interactive toy, and he anxiously attacks it every time I put treats in it and give it to him.

No enrichment at all

Unfortunately, my dog had every piece of kibble and treat out of this thing in 40 seconds.....twice! He is no Genius K-9, agility master or Service dog, but he is pretty smart, and he had it empty in less than a minute.

I wasn't sure what to expect

This is our first puzzle toy, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I have an 8 month old cavalier king charles spaniel who was recently spayed. Our trainer suggested some enrichment activities to keep her out of trouble. Here's what I think. PROS: * It's fairly sturdy, though my pup isn't rough with it. Common sense dictates that if your dog is more destructive, you should closely supervise and take it away once all the treats are found. * Though it doesn't state so on the box, this can be set for 3 levels of difficulty. First, you can hide treats in the holes and slide the fins over to cover them. To add a layer of difficulty, slide the pegs to lock the fins in place. This will require the dog to slide the peg before they move the fin. Finally, add some treats to the bonus holes in the pegs. Those can only be found after the dog slides the peg away from the fin, then moves the fin, and finally slides the peg back and forth over the hole to drop and reveal the hidden treasure. Whew! Got that? CON: * This is a level 2 puzzle. I didn't start with a level 1 because they seemed too easy. Nonetheless, my pup quickly figured this out, even at the highest level of difficulty. She likes it, and it's still fun for her, but I was hoping to keep her engaged for more than a few minutes.

For bored puppy

My 18 week puppy would be bored and full of zoomies at 8 pm. I read where it was probably bored and physical exercises didn’t help that. This game has been a saver. He figured it out quickly but he does calm down after his working with getting the treats out.

More like level one. Too easy.

The toy is well constructed, but the puzzle much easier than other level two games. At level two, these toys typically require two different motions from the dog, like flipping open a lid and sliding a compartment to the side. This looks like it does that at first glance, but with it in front of my dog, I realized it's really all just sliding--nudging the lids to swivel open and nudging the sliding knob aside are essentially the same action. And it's also the action that is the easiest and most intuitive for the dog--simple bumping with the nose. So there's nothing "wrong" with it, per se, except that it's much easier than advertised. My dog isn't that smart and this didn't challenge her at all. However, it would work fine as a slow feeder and would probably be fun for a puppy.

Dogs had a great time!

My bassets loved it - it didn't take them that long to figure it out - I had expected it to be more difficult than it was - actually took longer for me to fill them both up (one for each dog) than it did for them to get the treats but the enjoy it every time.

Learned Fast

Our dog loved finding the little hidden treats, at first, I was doing it wrong only using the compartment for the flippers, that's why it was so easy, then I read that there are 14 compartments, so that made it more of a challenge, but Caesar figured it out!

Well made & engaging!

Wow, my dog loves this thing! She's not super food motivated, but she loves mental stimulation, and we regularly hide kibble in her fillable toys so she took to this very quickly. She was able to figure out even the hardest level after 2 or 3 uses, but she still has a lot of fun hunting for the kibble and pushing the pieces around. It's also very sturdy and has no removable pieces, so I don't have to worry about her swallowing something she shouldn't.

Best idea ever!

I heard about these puzzles from a friend and was immediately intrigued. Purchased this one, and my dog loves it! Great way to give him treats since it keeps him busy for a while.
