Questions & Answers

Surface coverage?

Answer by ChewyMay 31, 2025
This bag covers approximately 40 square feet when spread to a depth of 1.5 inches. Increasing the depth to 2 inches will cover about 30 square feet, while a 4-inch depth will cover approximately 15 square feet. These estimates are based on the bedding's volume of 5 cubic feet per 33-pound bag.

How many liters is in this 33lb bag?

Answer by ChewyAug 24, 2025
This bedding is sold by weight rather than liters. The 33-lb bag covers approximately 40 square feet when spread to a depth of 1.5 inches.

Is this bag compressed?

Answer by ChewyMar 17, 2025
The bags of hemp are compressed.

Would not use hemp again

After using construction sand in my coop and run for four years I decided to try hemp in my newly built coop for less dust. I found this hemp was equally as dusty as the sand, did not control odor and is extremely challenging, near impossible, to scoop/ clean out droppings. It also tracks all over my barn. In my opinion hemp is too expensive to not live up to the hype everyone is talking about and did not work for me.

Worth the Price

Hemp is incomparable to straw or pine shavings. Aside from all of the advertised benefits (less dusty, high absorption, etc.) my birds aren’t able to scatter it

Hemp is incomparable to straw or pine shavings. Aside from all of the advertised benefits (less dusty, high absorption, etc.) my birds aren’t able to scatter it as much. Straw seems to get flung everywhere and stick to everything but the hemp just stays where you put it. I suppose it’s got some weight to it and that’s why. The price in general is outrageous but I’ll continue to buy it simply because of how well it absorbs moisture and odor. I used it in my brooder box and in my coop.

Doesn’t work as described

I have always gotten my hemp bedding from Carolina Coops but thought I would give this a try based on pretty good reviews, and it being cheaper. Unfortunately this

I have always gotten my hemp bedding from Carolina Coops but thought I would give this a try based on pretty good reviews, and it being cheaper. Unfortunately this product just doesn’t do what it’s supposed to. It doesn’t help with the smell or break down the chicken poo (I do clean/stir every few days) and it is breaking down to dust in just a matter of three weeks. The only reason I get hemp bedding in the winter is to help keep the coop warm and not have to clean it in the winter. I really feel like I waisted my money, just not good quality.

The size of the bedding

The hemp bedding was much larger than I have previously purchased from other companies. It will go a long way in my chicken house.

Nice Price for Hemp

I only use hemp bedding in my coops and I decided to try this one since I got 3 more pounds than my regular hemp and the price was so much better. I like this hemp,

I only use hemp bedding in my coops and I decided to try this one since I got 3 more pounds than my regular hemp and the price was so much better. I like this hemp, but I personally have 1 tiny complaint about it not being softer ---it's texture is more straw like instead of the softer hemp, but will order again. I am happy with the product and love that I get more for less...always a plus.

Bag was opened prior to shipping

The bag had been sliced open before being shipped and the bedding spilled out into the box during shipping. Made a big mess!

Probably the best price for hemp bedding

I was planning to build a new coop and to clean out the run and use hemp bedding in both the roosting house and the floor of the run, following the "deep litter method", having heard of it from YouTube videos made by the owner of Carolina Coops, who puts out a lot of video content. He swears that the hemp bedding has properties that cut down on smells and flies, and that you literally don't need to change it more than once a year, if that--some people go two years. Carolina Coops sells their own preferred hemp bedding, but it is $80 instead of $60. I ordered one box of it from Carolina Coops and two from Chewy, and found the bedding to be identical to my eyes, as well as my husband's. So far, the litter is doing a great job of preventing smells, and there are fewer flies than there were before.
