About This Item

Details

Pergolide is a dopamine agonist prescribed by your veterinarian to treat certain endocrine disorders. Pergolide compounded powder is a white to off-white colored powder that is made specifically for your pet.

Compounded Pergolide contains the labeled amount of pergolide as pergolide mesylate. A compounded preparation labeled 'Pergolide 1 mg' contains pergolide mesylate equivalent to 1 mg of pergolide base. 1mg of pergolide base is equivalent to approximately 1.3 mg of pergolide mesylate.

The compound is labeled to align with commercial forms of pergolide. A 1 mg pergolide tablet contains the same amount of pergolide as a 1 mg Compounded Pergolide.

I was so happy when Chewy started offering this compounded pergolide. We have two mares with PPID that we've had to give the tablets to for several years. The only way we could get them to consistently take the pills was to make little sticky molasses balls using ground up horse pellets and oatmeal. Those were time consuming to make and sort of a mess to handle. On top of that, the tablets were very expensive. Also, over time, their doses changed so sometimes we were giving 1.5 tablets or 0.5 tablets. Now, with the powder, the doses are much less expensive and we don't have to make the special "horse cookies" to hide the tablets. I just have a couple of 2 oz plastic containers that I put their senior horse pellets in (that already have a lot of molasses on them.) Just before feeding, I scoop their dose of powder into the container, put the lid on, and shake it around to make sure all the powder sticks to the pellets. It does take an extra minute or two to feed the horses because I give them the medicated 2oz first and make sure each one eats it all. Sometimes I have to slide the pan under them to catch any food they dribble out, but once they clean it up I can then pour out the rest of their food. After the first couple of feedings they both got used to the molasses powder flavor and seem to really like it. I've been using the powder for about a year now and it seems to control their PPID as well as the tablets. I think the key is to make sure they get every last bit of the medicine.I have a container for the 1.5mg/1.25cc as well as one for 1.0mg/1.25cc mixture. That makes it nice, because both horses get 1.5mg in the morning then one horse gets an additional 1.0mg dose in the evening. So, I can just grab the can with the right dose and give a level scoop and not have to try estimating a half scoop. Again, I'm very thankful this compounded pergolide is an option. I hope Chewy continues making it.

Love the compound

I was giving my cushings horse the pill but it became too expensive. The compound is a great alternative and just as effective.

Great product and excellent service

My horse refused to take other medication, even when I tried hiding it in various treats, but with flavoring options I’m able to put right in with his feed. Game

Used on one pony for 2ish years. This June we redid blood work as his condition was declining. Unfortunately, his numbers were very high, indicating the meds were no longer managing his cushings. Additionally, his weight and coat had declined significantly despite increase in feed/calories. We doubled the dose of the compounded pergolide and re ran the blood 6 weeks later- expecting to see an improvement. There was a marginal improvement in his numbers, though his condition had not improved. We switched him to branded pergolide (Prascend) and saw a substantial improvement in 3 weeks - coat completely shed out and gained roughly 75-100 lbs. Vet shared this is common experience with compounded pergolide. Chewy customer service was great and quickly shipped out Prascend and refunded the new (opened) compounded version.

Tried several things... this one he at least tolerates. Doesn't like the taste, but seems to trust me and swallow it down. Previous things were either spit back out, or completely refused! Anybody got a good way to get it in him? I'm using large syringes (no needle) in the side of the mouth - they work, but wear out in a about 3 weeks...
