FAQ

Birds at my feeder look sick, what should I do?

The best thing to do is to stop feeding the birds temporarily. Remove the feeders and throw out all of the seed. Thoroughly wash your feeders. Remove all debris from under your feeder. Do not touch the sick birds. Refill all of your feeders and resume feeding.

How do I prevent seeds from sprouting under my feeder?

You will need to sterilize your seed to prevent it from germinating. This will not alter the attractiveness or the nutritional value of the seed in any way. Here are two methods:Conventional Oven: Place the seed on a baking sheet and cook for 30 minutes at 300°F.Microwave Oven: Place seed in a paper bag. Cook on high power for 5 minutes.

Why does the seed in my feeder get moldy?

Mold is caused by a heavy rain, driving sleet or snow plugging the feeding ports and allowing water to dampen the seed. Always clean, dry and refill your feeders after heavy weather. You may also want to try placing 1/4" of cat litter in the bottom of the feeder to absorb excess moisture.

    Sturdy and Bright Addition

By Rosascantina on May 4, 2021

This is larger and sturdier than I thought it would be. I like that! It is bright and attractive and holds a good amount of bird feed. I have noticed several birds perched all around it and one or two just sitting for the swinging motion! I have yet to see male cardinals come so I am hoping they will. I rated it with 4 stars because the top of the feeder has to be held up while the new bird seed is being put it, so that is alittle difficult and that I have seen no cardinals come to feed yet. It is well-made and will last a long time.

    Squirrels were obsessed

By treerataffliction on Apr 26, 2021

I bought this thinking that with the metal mesh body, the squirrels might find this feeder was not worth the effort to get seeds out. Sadly, exactly the opposite was true. They were totally obsessed with it. Like some extremely intriguing puzzle they felt compelled to solve. The second I hung this up there was a squirrel on it and they fought over it for 24 hours, and each squirrel who perched on it stayed forever, until the small amount of black oil seeds I put in to test things out - about two cups, was completely gone. I did not care for the design either. The latches do not stay shut on the lid and the squirrels managed to unhook both of them, so the lid did not stay closed or lie I bought this thinking that with the metal mesh body, the squirrels might find this feeder was not worth the effort to get seeds out. I did not care for the design either. The latches do not stay shut on the lid and the squirrels managed to unhook both of them, so the lid did not stay closed or lie flat. The feeder was larger than I expected and I didn't want anything that holds so much seed, especially seeing the hit it was with my squirrels. The cardinals would've liked it if they weren't constantly shooed away by squirrels. The finches, tufted titmice, and white breasted nuthatch each got their two seconds of feeding time while the squirrels were taking an extremely brief break. I will give this two stars for the mesh managing to stand up to all the gnawing. Filling it is annoying and the rim separates from the base, allowing any seed that gets onto the rim to fall out, as several squirrels quickly demonstrated. I'm really grateful to Chewy for refunding me for this feeder. … more

    Really Poor Quality

By Michael on Apr 27, 2021

The cardinals still love it but have bought one of these several years ago and I can say the build quality has severely suffered. Start with the paint. It fades really fast in just a month and the way you load the seed has become much more difficult than past models of this. Not that its changed over the ones made over 10 years ago but the use of sub-standard materials in the ones made now. Have had to modify with much better materials to fix how to load seed. Within 6 months the red has turned to brownish red and the paint on the bottom tray is peeling off and is now rusting. Not buying any more of them until they address the severe lack of quality. Do not recommend. Avoid

    Not so great

By beans on Jul 12, 2021

It is attractive and I have seen one cardinal so far. Major problem is that the top does not fasten securely, thus letting in rainwater.

    Great, deer-proof feeder

By renee on Mar 26, 2021

This feeder is great. It’s easy to fill, there’s a lip at the bottom for birds to perch on if they like, but the seed doesn’t flow out the bottom so deer can’t get at it. I’ve seen many different varieties of birds use this feeder so they’re happy with it, too. It also holds a decent amount of sunflower seeds so I’m not having to fill it constantly. I’ve got 4 of them now.

    Perky-Pet Cardinal Wild Bird Feeder

By Girliebird on Apr 3, 2021

This is a very interesting bird feeder. It's basically several pieces connected together. Very unique. I will be using it as soon as I have the seeds for it. The red color is beautiful and will show up nicely while hanging from the big juniper tree!

    Warped top

By Preciousrockmomaggie on Jul 14, 2021

Top does not sit flat on the top of feeder allowing rain to get the seeds wet.

    Great for Blackbirds and Crows

By Paulie on Apr 14, 2021

I believe the only reason too call this a 'cardinal' bird feeder is because of it's red color. Haven't had a single cardinal yet. Score: Blackbirds/Crows, 100; Cardinals, 0.
