The bars on the side are adjusted by the tension knobs depending on the width of your door. The manufacturer recommends that the space should always remain less than 2 inches for the safety of your pet.

Nice gate with an Achilles heel

Gate and frame are sturdy and well made. Unfortunately the locking mechanism on the bottom relies on a two-cent part that renders the gate ineffective. My dog (a 60 lb retriever) figured it out the first night. Unless your dog is content to be confined, this gate is not for you. This is unfortunate, since it is an attractive gate and could be fixed with a simple change to the locking rod. I added a short bicycle chain and lock to compensate for the "Achilles heel" in the design. Not pretty.

Very pretty gate

This is a beautiful gate. I had to send it back. I should have double checked the size. I assumed it would fit a standard doorway. It fits a minimum 32" doorway

This is a beautiful gate. I had to send it back. I should have double checked the size. I assumed it would fit a standard doorway. It fits a minimum 32" doorway. Too bad they don't have a smaller width. Lucky you if your doorway is wider than mine lol. The metal mesh felt very durable as well.
