I tried these as an alternative to Peck & Scratch's very pricy oyster shell that all my hens have liked. This one is also flaked, so I hoped it would be to their liking. The box is a little awkward but it was taped shut so no product lost in shipping. It was hard to get open and access the product, but it's a nice sturdy box. As others have noted, the product has an odd (not in a good way) smell. To me, it smells like sewage. But I put in in the dish, and the new layers are eating it like gangbusters. If they continue to eat it, I'll continue to buy it.

Nice But Dusty

You get a lot for the money, but a lot of it is crushed to powder. But my hens still eat in when they need it. It's probably better for ducks and small bantams

Almost a 5 star

2 things stand out... Packaging. This needs a more secure form of Packaging so that it doesn't leak out , loosing volume. Maybe a stitched bag like the coope refresh

Second. When I first staryed purchasing this product it seemed better. Finer. More of the calcium flakes from weathered shells and almost no "other" shell. This is a difficult type of product to find. So I suppose we should be happy to get what we get. My spoiled ducks will not touch the pebbley crushed type shell. Since this is the only option I feel like there are no other choices. Thanks for reading this and taking any advisement from my thoughts.

Damaged; missing product

Package arrived with packaging tape on either end and clear signs of product loss. Weighed package and found .25# short - not a huge loss, but a loss nonetheless

Package arrived with packaging tape on either end and clear signs of product loss. Weighed package and found .25# short - not a huge loss, but a loss nonetheless. I have not given it to my chickens yet. However, the flakes look like the real oyster supplement I used to give them before flakes became hard to come by. My chickens will not eat crushed shell, so I’m hopeful they’ll accept these flakes.

Great product, in spite of occasionally roughed-up packaging

Sometime last year, both our duck and chicken flocks ceased eating their crushed oyster shell from the feed store. I couldn’t tell what had changed about it, but suddenly none of our birds wanted any part of it anymore. In desperation I tried the flaked oyster shell instead, and they were all won over by it right away. The chickens’ egg shells get SO brittle without the oyster shell supplementing their layer crumbles, and both chickens and ducks deplete their bones without sufficient calcium, so I will get them whatever they decide they like, and they like this!

Not sure what to say, as soon as I purchased Duck food and this oyster shell the ducks that had been hanging out for weeks left town. Hopefully Oyster shell doesn't go bad. I'm down to one neighborhood rooster and he hasn't come by lately and the peacocks might be interested as I seem to be on the nursery rotation for the 2 mom's and 3 babies in the neighborhood. Someone checked it out the other day, but they didn't dive in and go hog wild. All in all, it's nothing more than a yard decoration at this time.
