I LOVE this crate!!! I would suggest a better tray system as I have destroyed it in less than 2 hours and my mommy is very upset with me.
This crate is sturdy and keeps the dog more secure and safer than a wire cage. Our 38lb mixed breed is comfortable in it with a dog bed, as long as we are home. The crate is large for a medium size dog. The spacing of the bars on the bottom is wider than I'd like. I am uncomfortable leaving her alone in the crate without a way to protect her paws. The dog has a debilitating case of separation anxiety. One of her coping mechanisms is scratching the crate like a maniac. I'm worried she'll hurt herself on the bars. Another way of acting out her panic is ripping things up into tiny little pieces in sheer panic. Fortunately, she does not ingest much of it, but we cannot leave her with anything but a Nylabone in her crate, for her safety. We have to move her away from the window, so she doesn't chew on the wall. I found a place that makes custom-sized pads for dog crates that are made from heavy-duty vinyl with pet-safe foam filling. They make it fit very tightly, which makes it hard for my dog to get enough of a grip to start chewing. It is not 100% fool-proof but will last months instead of hours. The pad gives her a bit of padding and gets her off those floor bars. I am considering getting a metal crate tray, also made to size to have as a backup or additional base to keep our dog safe. We love her and have spent a lot of money to keep her safe when we must leave the house. We're doing training, she's on medication, etc. The finish of this crate has been scraped off by the dog in some spaces, but I see no rust so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
I have a 90-lb, 5 year old GSD and he has destroyed 2 wire kennels and broken teeth to get out of them. He is absolutely PERFECT in this kennel, it certainly helps him feel more secure. Assembly is easy and the kennel is well-made. Definitely worth the investment, especially if you have a destructive/anxious dog.
I think it's a strong cage for an indoor only situation. I wouldn't expose it to weather or water. It loses a star because I don't like the tray/base design or the hasps. I might have ordered the wrong size but it's too large to return. FedEx delivered it to my door, but I feel terrible because it weighs 100 lb. It's easy to assemble if you use masking tape to hold the sides up while you line up the top and insert the bolts
This crate is heavy and heavy duty. If your dog can destroy everything, like a hurricane coming through the Atlantic, this is the crate for you. This is indestructible and heavy. You are not going to move it very easily unless you install the wheels. This giant dog home won't be thrown in the back of your SUV, but maybe a truck if your husband is a body builder. It does not collapse and fold away, so you are stuck with it being a part of your house (we have embraced it). You will need a crate pad otherwise your dog could be very uncomfortable. An indestructible crate pad, if your dog is anything like mine. Also, if you have smaller dogs, they enjoy the bottom trap door to keep the big dog out (sometimes needed during dinner time). Don't question my dog parenting, it works for us. My little ones try to see how much food they can throw between the bottom bars so you are forced to pull out the bottom trays and clean them. I give this crate 10 stars after dealing with many other crates.
