Has this product been grown without pesticides or herbicides?(ie free from pesticides/herbicide grown organically?)

Answer by ChewyFeb 21, 2024
Barley (straw) receives one application of 2,4D herbicide. In some cases, Standlee also utilizes growth regulators such as Cerone (Ethephon) or Palisade (Trinexapac-ethyl) to prevent the barley from growing too tall and falling over prior to grain harvest.

About how long of pieces does this chopped straw have?

Answer by ChewyFeb 27, 2024
This chopped straw is made by chopping wheat or barley straw into approximately 4’ pieces.

I bought this three times (3x) and the first batch was good without a lot of weeds. This was on auto ship. The second delivery was full of weed seeds and took over my garden bed. The third shipment arrived before I realized what was happening. I will not be buying this again. EZ straw was a much better product.

This is now grass clippings. According to Customer service at Standlee they changed die sizes used to cut now each blade of straw is half the length and 1/4 the width of normal straw. Probably will not insulate animals so use caution so they do not freeze. Mostly tiny pieces and dust - find something else.

I was desperate for straw quickly or I probably would not have used any of this. In the first few handfuls I pulled out, there were brown wood pellets, green bedding chips and several dirt clods. I read reviewers saying it was dusty, but it was more than that. It is pretty pulverized so a lot will be wasted and not do its job of giving the cats a nice warm bed. If you need it fast and cheap and don't mind sifting and picking through it and losing a lot of product, go for it.

I had never heard of chopped straw before. I bought it to use in my outside feral cat houses. The weather is freezing in Chicago with a lot of snow. The kitties are able to push it around much easier to make a nest around themselves to keep extra warm. So much better than buying a bundle of regular straw. Buy it. You will love it if you have feral cats!

Bought this straw to make winter shelters for community cats, hoping it would be more comfortable and cleaner than baled gardening straw from a hardware store. It is indeed very clean, no mold, and finely chopped. Seems like it'll make very comfortable bedding. HOWEVER - it is SUPER dusty! It literally covered the inside of the cat shelter in a thick coat of dust with the very first handfuls. I ended up dumping the amount of straw needed to fill in halfway on my driveway and agitating it by hand (thankfully it was a windy day) to try and get rid of the dust. It mostly worked, but still much dustier than I'd like, since these poor cats will be inhaling a bunch every time they try to burrow in the straw. I don't want to waste it so I'll use the rest of the bag in my raised beds, but I think I'll go buy a bale of regular straw to add a layer of non-dusty stuff on top of the cushy chopped straw. Not impressed.

Soft bedding

I've tried Hemp bedding before but it's not soft. My chickens didn't care for it either. Now we use chopped straw. So much better.

Great straw bedding for insulated houses for our 2 outdoor cats

My husband built two insulated houses for cats that adopted us. This straw is perfect to keep them warm and cozy. It’s also soft.
