Sulfasalazine is a sulfa drug that is used primarily to treat inflammatory bowel disease and colitis. It is also used to reduce the actions of substances in the body that cause inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea.
Sulfasalazine is given by mouth.
The exact mechanism of action of Sulfasalazine in treating inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Most of the oral drug is not absorbed into the blood stream, but remains in the intestine where it does its work.
Sulfasalazine will not produce immediate effects, nor will it cure the condition. Generally the medication will need to be given for two or more weeks before effects are seen. At that point, your veterinarian may lower the dose. Do not lower the dose unless directed to by your veterinarian.
