We have a 35 year old Polish Arabian who has just started to get some lameness the last two falls. We decided to give this product a try as it said it helped with laminitis recovery from the inside out. I waited to give my review so we had enough time to see if their were improvements. Let's just say, our horse is running the fence line again! His hooves look amazing and our farrier has even asked what we have done differently. I also think it is a great price point and will be buying this again!

Summit hoof supplement and hoof cracks

I did a little reading about hoof supplements in general, and Summit contains the ingredients most commonly listed as important for healthy hooves - amino acids

I did a little reading about hoof supplements in general, and Summit contains the ingredients most commonly listed as important for healthy hooves - amino acids (methionine in particular), minerals (zinc and calcium), MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), and biotin. The latter two are important in formation of keratin, which is what hooves are made of. Summit contains more biotin than other supplements I looked at. I started using this about a week ago, and it will be months before I would expect to see any resulting changes. Coincidentally, I now have a challenging test case. My horse had minor quarter cracks on one front hoof, on both inside and outside. Yesterday, we did a combined driving marathon (7 km at a brisk trot, with 6 obstacles that involved turns and cantering). At the end of the marathon, the hoof wall at both of those cracks blew out. The hoof wall essentially tore along the cracks. He is toward the end of his shoeing cycle, 6 weeks since his last shoeing, which probably contributed. Hooves grow slowly, and it will be months before we can assess improvement, so this is only a preliminary review. Stay tuned for Part 2.

Last year I brought home a new horse who came to me barefoot behind and with a lot of chipping and cracking on his hooves. Since I’ve owned him, I’ve tried a couple of different hoof supplements to give nutritional support for improving his feet. Recently, I tried Summit Animal Health Hoof Strength. I was impressed by the fact that it contains 5 times as much biotin and almost twice as much methionine as the other hoof supplements I have tried. My horse has only been on this supplement for a few weeks but when my farrier was out this week he said my new gelding had grown a lot more hoof than my other horse who isn’t on this supplement. I would say that’s an impressive result! My farrier told me in addition to the increased growth my horse’s hooves are getting stronger. I can see that my horse’s feet aren’t chipping anymore. As a side benefit of all the biotin and methionine, I’ve also noticed that his winter coat is growing in with a beautiful shine to it! If your horse has slow hoof growth or is struggling to grow good quality hoof horn I would definitely recommend trying this product.

I’ve tried a lot of different things over the years to help keep my horse’s hooves healthy, but Summit Animal Health Hoof Strength has honestly been the first thing that’s made a real difference. Her feet were starting to chip and crack, and it was driving me crazy trying to stay ahead of it. After using this for a little while, I can tell her hooves are stronger and growing out so much better. She’s moving more comfortably, and even my farrier noticed the difference. It mixes in easy with her feed, and she doesn’t pick around it like she usually does with supplements. I’m not one to brag on products often, but this one really deserves it.

This has done a great job improving my two horses’ hoof quality. Blueberry is a typical thoroughbred, with thin walls and a tendency to chip. After using this, I’ve noticed way less chipping! Plus she’s extremely picky and she actually eats this with no issue. Charlotte is an Andalusian that has had laminitis before and keeping her feet strong is top priority. Adding this to her daily regimen made me feel like we are staying ahead of things and keeping them as healthy as we can. She also eats this without a problem although she’s not a picky eater to begin with.

When I opened this product, it looked like somehow the seal had been damaged and moisture had made its way in. See photos. Because of this I did not give it to my horse for fear that the product had gone bad due to the seal leak and being unsure of what liquid may have caused it. It also has a very heavy smell to it - not sweet like something a horse would like, but rather like a smokey heavy aroma and although I couldn't try the product, I didn't feel like it was something my horses would even want to eat.

Better than just biotin

I have tried using biotin to improve hoof condition in the past and had zero results. This product doesn't stop with just biotin it also has zinc, calcium and methionine

I have tried using biotin to improve hoof condition in the past and had zero results. This product doesn't stop with just biotin it also has zinc, calcium and methionine. Of course it only works if the horse eats it and I have the pickiest horse on the planet -- he doesn't even like carrots. I was amazed when he ate this and more importantly, is still eating it weeks later. Even though it takes 9 months to grow a new hoof, I see changes in his coat at this point and will continue to feed this over the next 9 months to help his hooves. My horse is a thoroughbred so his feet are prone to problems but this product early on seems to be addressing the cracking, chipping and damage from white line disease. I am very pleased with this supplement.

I don't see a major change which I didn't really expect. My horses don't love it and neither do I. Powder supplements can be hit or miss but this is a fine dusty

I don't see a major change which I didn't really expect. My horses don't love it and neither do I. Powder supplements can be hit or miss but this is a fine dusty powder and I feel like I breathe it in just from opening the container. The smell was not appetizing at all. My horses do eat it as long as it's mixed in with the bulk of their food but will leave it in the bucket if it falls to the bottom.

I am using this for a geriatric donkey that is showing hoof brittleness and peeling. As he is a mini, I am using 1/3 scoop for him mixed with grain. The smell is not as sweet as expected, but he hasn't seemed to notice and eats it well. I will monitor for results, but the key is to get them to take it first, right? Also, since he is getting arthritic, this may also be helpful for joint comfort as he ages.
