Description

Terbutaline is a generic prescription and is used to treat shortness of breath, wheezing and other symptoms cause by asthma, collapsing trachea, chronic allergic bronchitis and other diseases of the lung. It works by relaxing muscles in the airway to make breathing easier and less stressful. Customers may receive this drug under the names Brethine, Bricanyl.

Uses

Terbutaline is used to help improve breathing in specific airway diseases, treating asthma, tracheobronchitis, collapsing trachea, allergic bronchitis and certain lung conditions. It may also be used for the treatment of an abnormally slow heart rate.

Possible Side Effects

Please contact your vet immediately if you notice any of the following reactions: increased heart rate, tremors, nervousness and dizziness. These effects usually disappear after a short time. However, if these are severe, persistent or if your pet's condition worsens, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Drug & Food Interactions

Talk to your veterinarian about any other drugs your pet is taking, including vitamins and supplements, antidepressants or beta-blockers (e.g. certain heart medications such as propranolol). Digitalis, digoxin or inhaled anesthetics may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in pets taking Terbutaline.

Precautions

Not for use in pets allergic to Terbutaline. Use with caution in pets with diabetes, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), high blood pressure, a history of seizures or low levels of potassium in the blood. Use with extreme caution in animals with heart disease. Do not use Terbutaline if your pet is having difficulty breathing, since the effects of the medication takes several hours to have an effect. In this case, seek emergency care immediately.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
