...Healthy is not! With a carbohydrate content of 23% DMB, sodium of 1.54% DMB, and cranberries in the ingredients, this otherwise promising low-phosphorus food is very problematic. Cranberries contain benzoic acid, which cats do not have the pathways to metabolize and it could build up to toxic levels in them if they are eating foods with cranberry at every meal over a prolonged time period. Cats with CKD are particularly at risk, both because they have a harder time eliminating waste from their bloodstream, and because the cranberry is too acidifying for them when they are already prone to developing metabolic acidosis. Cats, in general, do best with a diet of 10% carbohydrates or less. This amount is approaching the amount in kibble; though, some dry food will contain even 2 to 3x that amount of carbs. The protein is slightly lower than optimal and probably part of how they're able to keep it with such low phosphorus levels which is rare for non-prescription, non-renal diet foods. Keep in mind this food is not appropriate for kittens or even young cats of some breeds who are still growing because it is not enough phosphorus for them. It could be a good occasional food to rotate in for Senior cats and cats with compromise kidneys. Think of it as a junk food treat, not a healthy indulgence!
