Kennel cough, a common respiratory infection in dogs, isn’t usually considered a medical emergency, but prompt treatment can ease your dog’s discomfort. Choosing the right kennel cough medicine for dogs comes down to the type and severity of your pup’s symptoms. In most cases, supportive therapy is sufficient, but severe cases of kennel cough may require antibiotic treatment. Your veterinarian can help you select the most appropriate kennel cough treatment for your dog. Common kennel cough treatments include the following:

• Cough suppressant: Alleviates coughing and helps soothe sore throat
• Decongestant: Helps clear away mucus from the lungs and airways
• Respiratory support: Herbal solutions that support general respiratory health
• Antibiotics: Usually reserved for serious cases that progress to pneumonia

Most cases of kennel cough resolve within 10 to 14 days. To prevent the spread of infection, however, your vet may recommend keeping your dog away from other dogs for a few more weeks after they recover.
